hey everyone welcome back to the live stream tonight this one's going to be a short live stream but I want to go over
1:53
uh what I'm doing in the van give you an update of what I'm working on uh so inside inside the van here the
2:01
two uh I didn't know that we all in the industry call these blobs but apparently
2:08
the two pieces of foams foam in the left and right hand side of the van that
2:13
covers the airbag uh the current airbag they're known as the blobs and uh
2:22
thought that was kind of funny but at the same time I guess there's not really a better name for them anyway they're
2:28
something that's very difficult to uh upholster uh now I've upholstered ones
2:34
before but I wanted to show you guys a new
2:40
um uh there is second let me zoom in so these are the blobs I'm talking about so
2:47
there's the one on the driver and there's the one on the passenger side so I just got done upholstering them and
2:52
really other than making them look really nice it's pretty much all you can do there's not really a industry
2:58
solution uh but I wanted to show you a
3:04
website and let's see if I can pull it up here so you guys are probably familiar
3:10
with AVC rig I talk about them a bunch uh nothing sponsored by them but you
3:17
know if there's something that somebody that has a good approach to uh Vans um then I'll I want to talk
3:25
about it so we're going to go to Sprinter this company does products
3:30
so I've I've talked about them a bunch um so I want to show you the kit the
3:38
ceiling kit that I bought and then what we're
3:44
doing to in uh incorporate into the van hey guys welcome to the channel if
3:51
you guys are new thanks so much for uh checking us
3:57
out uh so tonight what we're doing is we're talking about um let's see here we're talking about the inside of the
4:03
van we're going to talk about where I'm at with the ceiling we're going to talk about these upholstered blobs which
4:08
they're called and then we're also going to talk about the uh the driver side of
4:13
the van where this um aluminum or this stainless channel is uh installed
4:20
because that is my next step and it involves upholstery so this is kind of
4:26
this is how you transition the ceiling to the wall and you have to do the walls first
4:33
because the ceiling needs to go over something instead of under something um
4:38
to give it a nice finished clean look so there's this company it's called ABC rig and they
4:46
have a wall panel kit so for this customer for John and Susan's van I purchased this wall kit and what it does
4:53
is instead of mapping out and custom cutting all the panels comes in a kit saves a little bit of time time um and
5:02
then it gives you just a place to start so that you're not starting from
5:08
scratch so the ceiling panels I installed them and there's always some
5:13
kind of quirks with ceiling panels because in a Ford Transit van you have a
5:19
roof that arcs down towards the driver and passenger then goes up then it's
5:24
straight towards the back at the same time there's an arc from the from left
5:31
to right so you get Arc left to right and then Arc front to back and when those all
5:37
combine uh you can get some really interesting geometry and uh side effects
5:43
from that so I'm going to talk a little bit about how I approach those to make it
5:50
look as good as um we can with a uh CU
5:55
every Van's custom and especially if you're wanting to keep everything nice and lightweight
6:00
you're not wanting to add a lot of uh unnecessary structure to the ceiling of a van for
6:06
example I'm going to show you what I did to uh to solve that and then we'll go
6:12
over inside the van how this all came together so you can see here I'm just going to briefly go over it but we have
6:20
a uh transition where we have a straight piece of wood and then we it starts to Arc and then curve
6:27
down so I'm going to show you why it's important to support that in a certain
6:32
uh in a couple different places and then I'm going to show you how I support it from left to right as my arc goes across
6:39
the van and some things I figured out so we're going to talk about that so stay tuned for that part of the
6:46
van we'll be inside the van here in just a minute but if we go to the computer
6:52
again and we see our kit so we're starting with a raw ceiling and then we're bolting this uh ceiling panel kit
7:00
in now technically these panels are meant to be upholstered and then just popped up in the ceiling but you know we
7:07
wanted to have a nice fancy Cedar ceiling so that's what we're doing in here but we're going to be using
7:14
the seiling system from this kit and we're applying our Cedar strips to it
7:22
because our Cedar strips they don't have that much structure they need something to glue and screw onto and that's what
7:29
we're using the ceiling kit for um let's keep going all right so
7:36
here's the kit you can see the ceiling panels so everything's pretty standard we're going to get to this part
7:42
right here so this piece of metal right here is a transition piece uh that a ABC rig sells and this
7:51
is what I use to transition from the wall panels to the ceiling and it's a it's some structure that you need
7:57
because behind this is a w wi from Ford that you know everybody has to deal with
8:03
move it up out of the way get it out of the way of your panels This is a solution to where you can offset your walls enough to where
8:10
you're not dealing with that factory cable that goes from the front to the back of the van you also have to don't
8:15
have to deal with the higher gauge wire if you have a rooftop AC um or like our
8:21
48 volt AC power cables or even light cables you can pass them behind this uh
8:28
extension piece helps a little bit with cable management but really it's made for the structure of the
8:33
van um so yeah so that's that piece and this is it up close so it's
8:40
actually bolted into the rib of the van and then it's just offset from the side
8:45
of the van uh however much you need it okay so let me back up so that is not
8:54
included in the kit you have to buy that separately and it's called the wall to ceiling support
9:00
again this is not sponsored I just think it's good information for you guys um yeah so this these pieces of bent
9:08
stainless and they bolt up in the van so now that
9:14
you know what we're talking about let's hop back over to the van and you can see that I have this on the left hand side
9:19
and the right hand side of the van so over here got it on the left and then I've got it over here on the
9:28
right um the challenge is the left hand side has to uh be offset for all the
9:35
wires and cables so if I go a little bit further over here try not make you guys seasick but
9:42
you can see in in our van we have uh all of our cables coming in
9:50
from the power system up into the wall and we're coming out from a grommet that
9:57
has plastic protection so we're not chafing on the metal of the van and so
10:03
as soon as I get over here and I start upholstering we'll be uh I'll stuff this with havlock wool insulation and then
10:10
we'll we'll cover it so we're getting really close to actually uh doing
10:16
upholstery covering the panels upholstered panels is great because it means you're getting closer
10:22
to the end um the wiring and all this stuff takes it just takes a lot of time
10:27
cuz you need you got to do right the first time cuz once all these panels go in it's going to be even though you can
10:33
take them out it'll be just a pain a lot of waste of time to go back and fix a
10:39
mistake so we're taking our time now doing it right and then um then we're going to cover it up
10:47
but as we make our way from left to right you see we have our insulation in and what I'm going to be doing today and
10:53
I said I'm going to keep it short is I'm going to explain to you how I'm going to transition between this piece of metal
11:01
the ceiling kit and then the cedar strips so that it makes a nice
11:08
seamless transition there's going to be seams in it but there'll be upholstered seams and uh oh hey John welcome to the
11:15
live stream glad you're watching and um so you'll have an upholstery seam in
11:22
the back but that is going to you'll see what I mean in just a second we'll get to
11:27
it uh and then lastly I'll talk about how I cleaned up this transition between
11:35
let's see how let's see how clear this camera is going to be it's not going to look that clear but you'll get um let me
11:42
back up hold on let's back up to here
11:49
okay so I'm going to hop in the van real quick I'm G to talk about these blobs
11:56
um I'm going to put a link here in the description cuz I want to this uh ABC
12:02
rig video it's very good I think I think
12:10
his videos are good I want you to watch my videos but I I think any bit of
12:17
information is good information so wrapping the
12:27
blobs here we go let me find the sharing
12:35
link okay so here's his video on wrapping the
12:41
blobs wish there was a different name that's uh that's what it
12:47
is all right so let's check out his video real quick
12:52
um so I met him at the Colorado adventure event Expo show so we did a
12:58
van tour of two of his builds his custom builds and what he's talking about is he
13:06
is going to mod take off these blobs and modify them um and I never thought to
13:12
just take a knife and then cut this to a flush surface so he's going to do
13:18
that pop down the top of the van and then you see there's a clean surface and
13:24
I'm going to show you what I did now he's upholst upholstering this in place um for me that's really
13:33
challenging because uh this whole strip right here has to be
13:40
taken out in order to um upholster this side panel right here so I don't like to
13:46
have that exposed but and I've already moved this wire to a different location uh so a
13:54
bunch of other stuff is going on so um I personally don't recommend
13:59
upholstering in the van I should think I think you should do it outside the van and then bring it back in because if you
14:05
accidentally hit this headliner you're pretty so because you're going to have
14:11
to replace it that's yeah you're going to have to replace it if you mess up so I just
14:16
wouldn't recommend that this blob pops out not only that the transition I'll
14:22
show you later but the transition inside my van where this ceiling is uh
14:29
I have no idea how that you would actually do it to end up having it look how I like it to look okay that's my
14:35
rant I still like his videos um but he does a good job of showing you
14:42
how to go through and actually wrap the panel now I think you should do it
14:48
outside but again he gives you a good method for wrapping it making sure that this side
14:55
is clean and flush uh where to actually trim and tuck the Ed edges in so yeah overall I think it's a good
15:03
concept for an approach cuz it taught me that I could slice this part of the foam
15:09
off and have this nice face this clean face I I never have thought about that before anyway he's got a bunch of other
15:15
videos on here um I like his videos because they go
15:21
over uh the wrapping of Interiors I know this is like a plug for
15:27
his stuff but um anyway he does he's got good interior
15:36
auler videos for somebody that would be a DIY and needs uh a little bit of help
15:43
from behind the scenes of how actually stuff is done to give you a good look when you're
15:49
finished okay we're going to hop in the van and we're going to continue explaining uh this process and we'll
15:55
glue a couple pieces in the van to um do our transition so let me Zoom the camera
16:01
out we'll hop on to the other microphone and then we'll get started here let's see how
16:13
about let's do that I think it looks pretty good CU my camera's on the other side of the shop
16:20
so all right let's hop in the van hold
16:25
on all right we'll start here I'll probably have to go back and forth but I can still see the chat I can still
16:31
see all you guys in the chat all
16:38
right so these blobs um I'm going to see which one can
16:45
I take
16:51
out so the way that this is going in I don't want to take this out but I I know
16:57
you guys want to actually I'm not going to take this out
17:02
because this is this is staying in here this took forever to actually get this
17:07
uh seated in place um so this comes out there are
17:13
some snaps that hold this in however when you upholster this to keep these get this nice transition you lose the
17:21
ability for it to hold in so this is a friction fit on the back and then this ceiling right here where this pulls down
17:28
that is what's holding this up and into place now there's about a/ inch here on
17:34
the bottom and uh I'm still trying to find a solution for
17:39
that um in Thomas's van we have a shelf that comes in here
17:46
and pushes this in so this is stationary and then over here on his van this one
17:53
that was wrapped we have another shelf that pushes it in stationary the bottom of this holds it
17:59
up and then uh the way that we did his ceiling holds it in so his
18:05
is his his is pretty sound this one is good um what you'll find
18:15
is and this is why it's hard to this is the challenge of doing custom work is
18:21
there's not really a Playbook and in your mind you have a way that you want it to look and having no Playbook and
18:28
trying to figure out how you want it to look you're responsible for that space in between so um I'll show you what I
18:36
came up with maybe it'll help you guys out so other than upholstering this which uh is pretty straightforward for
18:43
me I've done a bunch of it there's a couple little things that I needed to tweak one is addressing this Gap right
18:52
here so if any of you guys have seen some channels or videos online and you
18:57
see a solution for securing this into place like that
19:03
um now don't get me wrong this thing is not going to fall out this thing is secure however there's a line slit right
19:09
here that uh I figured out a way to um fill that in so what I'm going to
19:16
do is I'm going to take my four-way stretch fabric and I'm going to measure a piece from here all the way
19:22
down and this is not moving this is not moving but this so we need to fill this Gap up so what we're going to do is
19:28
we're going to fold this and this is going to be uh a transition strip and so
19:34
we're actually just going to now this is not the piece obviously but this one is going to come up into
19:41
here and we're just going to move it back into place and what that's going to do is
19:46
that gives us a really nice gives us a very clean transition
19:52
between here and here and uh it just looks presentable and that's
19:58
what I'm going for so next part about being presentable is
20:04
there are the there's a gap here because we got the Arc of the van but since we
20:10
have our ceiling panel that goes over the blobs and transitions back into the
20:16
van um our ceiling kind of flares up on the right and left side so I'm happy with everything here
20:23
but this transition what I did is uh I cut
20:29
four-way stretch fabric and it's behind this whole entire piece so it's up against
20:35
the cedar edges so when you're looking here it's just a super nice clean
20:40
straight line and then we have our same fabric transition going into this opening and
20:47
then fading and then coming back out so it looks like a factory finish so the
20:52
only thing that I'm addressing is this opening right here one
20:59
I don't want to spray any upholstery on here just as I explained
21:05
two uh this is a safety system so this is foam this is an airbag this is
21:12
designed to blow out um essentially explode down when you're in the event of
21:17
an accident so your side current airbag is coming all the way down so I've seen
21:23
companies make a thermoform plastic blob
21:29
and I know that's easy to mount secure um I just kind of
21:35
question what happens when the airbag goes off and this is a big piece of
21:42
plastic that's just my only it's my only thing um
21:48
so uh now I will say I do like the way Adventure wagon does it because it's
21:54
very nice and secured here um and it's very low Pro profile so I I'm
21:59
comfortable with that one but it's just something to think about so keeping
22:04
these foam I think is is good and wrapping them with fabric does the
22:10
trick I'm going to clean up this line so that that's pretty much it for the front I'm not going to dwell on that too much
22:16
so this this whole section here is finished now we're moving back to the transition pieces this right here is
22:23
going to take a lot of time because what we need to do is we're going to have to actually
22:30
uh we're going to um scribe so I've already scribed this side and so this
22:36
came in really nice so I'm basically scribing the same design as the ceiling
22:41
um if I had some forethought I would actually traced this and kept it on a template
22:47
sheet of paper so I could just transfer it to my ceiling I didn't do that so I'm
22:52
going to have to uh just it's fine I'm going to do it backwards take a piece of cardboard and get me a template uh nice
23:00
it thing is that it's a mirrored side so I can the same template I create over here I can create over here so I'm just
23:06
going to take a piece of card stock um and I'm going to scribe this
23:13
form and then what you do you take that form and you just take a measuring measuring tape you'll move from here out
23:20
to a specified Point typically it's the end of your template so let's I'm just
23:27
making this up say we had a a 10-in template all right and the template
23:32
starts here and this is the end of the 10 in so what you do is you know this is 10
23:38
in so you take your uh you'll take your
23:45
Cedar and then all you'll do is measure back 10 in put your template on there
23:51
cut it out and it should just be perfect it's usually it's perfect every time that I've done
23:56
it so you'll take these are just demo pieces but I'll take this and that um
24:05
you know that'll give me a hint of like what I what I'm going to expect now I got lucky
24:14
um sometimes these fun things happen in a van for
24:19
example uh if you notice
24:25
this I've got three more pieces Cedar to go here
24:31
and I'm not going to have to cut an additional spot three pieces is going to be
24:36
perfect um and the other side is the same thing so now we get to the next
24:41
part of the video I go from the cedar now how do I transition into from here into my wall
24:47
piece so I'm going to show you how to do that or how I'm going to do
24:53
that so we're fast forward imagine that this panel this is our panel that goes
24:58
here to trim everything out we've got this done this panel right
25:04
here we've got our upholstery so we did this earlier today so now that's all clean so if we
25:11
stand up and we're being picky and we want to see what Nick did to the van we can see he upholstered this really nice
25:19
so this is going to go on top of it and so now we have the blob that's
25:26
upholstered we've got our transition position and now we got our full uh fully uh upholstered panel so that makes
25:34
sense so how are we going to go from here down so what we're going to
25:39
do um and I'm actually going to bring the piece that I'm going to put
25:48
in so let me get a little adhesive on
25:55
here so I'm actually going I'm spraying
26:01
if you ever have uh something that you're putting adhesive on in a van you
26:07
go away to get up I don't know grab some food or something you wait too long sometimes the
26:12
adhesive uh sets and you need to wake it up so what I do is I just take we're using super 77 from 3M I just sprayed a
26:20
little bit kind of wakes up the adhesive um just count to 60 a minute
26:27
and you're ready to go again so two things you want to keep in
26:32
mind you want to find out where the panel is going to land all right so you want to figure out
26:39
where that's happening and then so that means we can
26:45
start we're going to start on this edge of the metal here and then we're going
26:50
to come up at the same time you got a multitask
26:56
in a van so so at the same time there's one more thing that we need to make sure that we
27:01
don't miss out on where is my second I lost my there they
27:15
are so we got to think in the future what what what is going to go what's going to cover this and how's that going
27:22
to work so we got these blocks and so we need need to make sure
27:29
that when we start the scribing is really are easiest
27:35
part of this the planning that we have to do is
27:40
um how are we going to get from here and we move over what is this going to look
27:47
like when we get to putting this piece of Cedar in so luckily it looks like I'm not
27:55
going to have to uh scribe it it it looks like I can just put it
28:00
in so now that's going to bump up here that looks nice this is covering this
28:07
wood so since the cedar is covering the wood I don't have to make sure that the upholstery is where the wood is
28:16
um now I just said that but that's actually not true I am going to put a
28:21
little bit of the fabric onto the wood come down and then come straight down
28:26
because I don't want if you're looking up this way just you to see a gap I want that Gap right here to be closed by the
28:34
upholstery itself so um I'm going to zoom in so you guys
28:39
can see what I'm talking about and that's pretty much the lesson for today's live stream was is what I'm
28:47
about about to do so let's zoom in let's move
28:55
over okay
29:08
all right I haven't been watching the chat let's see here steampunk van that sounds
29:16
cool all right so this this is ready to go I should be wearing gloves
29:22
but it's all good um let's see
29:32
here all right let's see how this is going to go so what I want to do
29:38
is this is not going to tell me where to put the fabric this is so this back side
29:45
is telling me that I need to kind of be probably an
29:53
inch in and then that's kind of where I want to be
29:58
so what I'm going to do is let's
30:09
see so I actually did not put enough adhesive on
30:21
here there you go all right we got to wait a
30:28
minute it's good time to answer any questions if you got some questions um I
30:34
need this to be really tacky so that I can glue this up here now I need it to
30:40
stick to the metal but really it's going to be sandwiched underneath this piece of Cedar here and then it's going to
30:46
be uh covered by this panel but if you always do it like you're going to look
30:52
at it with the panel off you'll never regret it when you put the panel on so so like making sure I did a good job
30:58
here or this seam it's all the little details that add up to where you can just kind of
31:05
forget about it later CU um you've
31:11
concealed the cracks so what we're putting this up here for is this is going to transition
31:16
our Cedar to our panel because there's going to be a panel Gap and I'm going to show you that in a second so the panel
31:23
Gap here you guys can see so we've got about an inch almost an
31:30
inch and a half of this panel Gap but that's inherent into this design that's how this wall system
31:36
is designed to be installed all right so we want to make
31:42
sure that we come out about an inch up here overlapping our
31:49
ceiling and so if that is where we want to sit and we want to be at the edge or a piece of met our
31:55
metal um we're going to come over our piece of metal just ever so
32:08
slightly now I'm not going to wrap behind the metal because it'll have the tendency to peel off over time um even
32:15
if I put enough uh adhesive on the fabric it's
32:21
still um in the future it might we don't want that happening
32:27
so what we're doing is we're just getting this lined up
32:35
here okay get
32:41
splinters all right so I'm securing the metal first
32:46
and then I'll tuck I'll touch the wood
32:53
surface all right so
32:59
all
33:07
right okay so that's what our piece here looks
33:25
like
33:36
and actually I did that that's not the way I wanted to do
33:41
that okay if you see I'm doing now I want
33:47
that there we
33:54
go okay that's that's much better
34:01
yeah I wanted this to be a
34:13
tight okay so by doing that now this is going to give us that Gap we want in
34:24
there now again this is not
34:29
uh this is going to be covered by this wood strip so we're going to have a
34:35
little bit of wood glue that comes into this so we need to make sure we're aware of that so we don't put way too
34:42
much and because we're super pro we need to make sure that we take off this
34:50
tongue off of this piece of wood and what you can actually do is we're just going to score it with a razor blade and
34:57
you can see here we'll score it and then this will just uh it'll pop off because I want
35:05
that to be a nice clean I don't want it to look like it's unfinished now is anybody going to see that no
35:11
but that's just the right way to do it so this will be up here that nice
35:17
clean Edge you'll see the upholstery then what you'll do is you'll have this
35:25
piece it's going to come up here like that and so you'll have your last piece
35:32
of Cedar and then there'll be this nice you won't see any cracks it'll just be a
35:37
fabric into fabric into Fabric and then last but not
35:43
least what we're going to do on this piece another P piece of test fabric
35:55
here
36:05
let's see okay so this
36:11
piece now this is just temporarily put in I do like how these panels have these
36:18
cutouts to temporarily hold it in so you're not always doing a self Tapper to
36:23
kind of figure out where you're going but what we're going to do here is take this and then we're going to glue this
36:30
up really well and we're actually going to put so we extended this out so that
36:36
we got this covered and then this piece this is pretty pretty obvious
36:43
what's going to happen I can get this in
36:55
here
37:13
okay so imagine that this is being glued glued onto here so now what this
37:18
will do is this panel doesn't sit on this panel it's above at about an eighth
37:25
of an inch so when this panel comes in you're going
37:30
to have another just a very
37:36
small seam here now
37:42
technically um there won't be a seam because when we
37:48
wrap this panel and then we wrap this panel they'll butt together but you just
37:53
don't want to risk it because if you get this whole thing installed then there's just a seam and you can see white paint
37:58
from the van it's just uh it's not pro
38:05
so but yeah so now this is a nice transition up here and when we have our
38:12
piece of uh Cedar coming
38:17
up we'll just have a nice everything will flow and look really
38:24
good that's for that's how this is going to
38:29
go um okay what else was I going to tell you guys it's pretty much it now if
38:37
you're wondering this this is ABC rig kit again if you're wondering what these holes are for it's because there are
38:42
these Ford factory holes pre-drilled and if you do want to piece put a piece of L
38:48
track up here um that's what they're keeping these open for same with this
38:54
they're allowing you to put a piece of L track now they have a whole um I personally don't like it but
39:03
uh style-wise it's just not I don't like the way it's design but they have their own cabinet system that will bolt into
39:10
these sections so as a company obviously they would make panels for their van
39:15
builds uh and their components but um so that's why they're here you're pretty
39:21
much just buying their panels to do your what you want to do with
39:27
them um so when I upholster this these will be taped over and you actually
39:33
won't you won't see these holes they'll be they'll be
39:40
gone all right
39:48
um oh yeah you're welcome about the four-way stretch fabric uh I think I I like four-way stretch fabric I think
39:54
it's uh it's something that really really solves a lot of problems and um looks really
40:01
good uh yeah let's uh flip the camera around
40:08
um let me know if you guys have any questions with this I'm GNA flip the camera around and I'm going to show you
40:14
the four-way stretch fabric back here because I I totally missed that
40:23
stream I just had to uh trying to stay on
40:35
a hold on a second let me get this moved
40:40
back stay with me guys this is going to be a little wild camera work here for just a
40:46
second oh God hold on hold
40:55
on okay one second I'm almost over there we're going to be looking at the rear
41:03
four-way stretch fabric I think you guys will be really interested in this these are the parts of the van that
41:10
a lot of people don't upholster because well they're frankly really hard
41:16
to okay um how are we going to do
41:25
this all give me one
41:32
second okay hold on the camera's going to go crazy there we go all right give me a
41:38
second I'm going reposition the light and then we're going to talk about the four-way stretch fabric because this
41:45
is where it really shines this if you're going to use four-way stretch fabric what I'm about
41:51
to show you is
41:57
this is where you want to put it
42:06
okay all right light is in the
42:16
van this is going to sound like a train wreck but everything is
42:25
okay
42:36
there we
42:48
go all right one more minute we will be all set
42:55
okay [Music]
43:05
see if I can fit one more light in
43:13
here okay how does that
43:25
look okay that's not bad all right so this
43:37
location this whole section back here the reason this is important is this is
43:43
where the cedar ceiling is going to be intersecting with the back of the van and there's really no good solution
43:50
I feel like this is a really good solution um
43:58
um see if that does that work better okay so what you're going to have is
44:06
your ceiling is going to come right here and
44:12
you see it's going to butt right up against this Fabric and you're just
44:17
going to have a super pro transition it's just going to look like you've been doing it for
44:22
years Cu uh this is just a hard area do a transition in and when I did Thomas's
44:29
van it uh everything was out of 8020 and we
44:35
this this area back here was used for loading in his parag golfer and it was
44:41
kind of just an area that didn't really have anything going on
44:47
um so yeah so this is a four-way stretch this is one piece of fabric
44:53
so you can see with the four-way stretch it Contours to these really aggressive
44:58
curbs on the inside um rolling out going into these little light
45:05
pockets and then you know fading over here to the
45:18
side um so let's see can I move this a little
45:24
bit let's see if back up just a
45:37
here yeah so there we go
45:43
um let's get that white cord out of the way so this is the cable we're going to
45:49
use for our 12vt lighting back here um I'll show you a little hat so I
45:56
keep this long and pretty much um depending on how
46:03
you have this in here you'll have to take something pretty stiff to get the the line back in
46:09
there but let's just get this out of the way so we can not be
46:16
distracted okay now there'll be a little bit of
46:22
wrinkles in the four-way stretch but as the van you know gets hot and cold it'll completely go
46:28
away um so and you can brush it you know just take like
46:35
a stiff bristle brush um and clean it off and it it's it
46:43
actually gives a little bit of uh in places where you can't uh put insulation
46:49
such as this and this is the back of the bed area so if you can kind of think about this part of the
46:54
van you know it's kind of like a headboard and this will keep it nice and
47:00
uh you know if you touch it and if it's cold outside you won't be startled because it'll be uh you know it'll take
47:07
the cold off of it and then we've got these really well insulated rear
47:12
doors and um you know they're going to help as well I haven't put the gasket on so I'm
47:19
not not actually going to close the door let's see
47:26
here yeah I just watched a video on the surge Supply ceiling kit um is that the
47:34
uh it's not like a tongue and groove it's almost like a slatted
47:39
ceiling is that what the one you
47:46
got oh so they actually have a rear plate that goes around okay that's
47:54
cool I just like this because I can I can wrap this in this back in this back lip
48:02
that goes around the corner so that when I put the seal on the weather seal on the back it completely covers it and it
48:08
looks really nice um I say the only downside is the four-way stretch fabric comes in a
48:14
standard length so I'm missing about 8 in on the bottom um but I've learned how
48:20
to make a clean seam so it's it's still going to look really good
48:27
but yeah that's the back of the doors um finished like I said I would close them
48:32
but you
48:44
know all right what other questions do we
48:49
got okay four-way stretch that's an update let's hop on to the big computer
49:03
all right let's see is this thing on on this side awesome you get the 3/4 inch planks
49:10
with the E inch Gap yeah that's that's cool that's
49:17
cool yeah I I literally just watch that video it's that's funny that you mentioned
49:24
that okay let me turn my camera back
49:31
on pretty cool guys pretty cool yeah that's a pretty good update um
49:37
one thing that I wanted to uh talk to you guys about that I have you on the stream is I I definitely want you guys
49:42
to check out the uh the peace love and vans video let me um let me go to the channel
49:54
here
50:05
yeah so we went to uh peace love and vans if you guys haven't seen this video um come on with these
50:24
ads yeah check out this video the one I what I wanted to show you was this Builder so
50:30
this is a Troy from nans and you guys have to see this tour
50:35
this this van um there's always one that jumps out at me and I'm actually going to get my face off of here so you guys
50:42
can see this for a second um is that it which one is
50:54
it is that there it goes okay yeah so this
51:00
van I mean the details he actually took
51:06
uh rope and glued the Rope into the vent grills that let the air escape from when
51:14
the do slam uh I mean if you guys know what that is I mean that's a detail here it is this right
51:20
here so I mean that's that's pretty amazing this right here
51:26
this is a little bit of a detail um these are real brick of course
51:32
they're you know like the veneer but they're Stone
51:37
um and one thing I wanted to point out just kind of nerding out on this video
51:43
is he didn't make a big deal of it but when he lifts the bed up these miter
51:50
joints right there that he made uh I mean it's like a it's like a
51:56
professional bolt Builder boat builder like you know if they build the boats out of just raw wood uh just he's very
52:04
fine details in this van so I'm really looking forward to see how he gets going with his uh his business um again
52:10
everything is just very well put together and imagine this is the 8020 so
52:17
this he's actually using these Cedar uh 2 by tws as the structure for everything
52:22
even his kitchen Galley um um but yeah definitely wanted you guys to check out this
52:28
video he got some really creative ways to uh just very minimally have a good
52:34
time with Van life but also bring a really good design aesthetic to the
52:42
Vans uh but that's a really cool video um this couple they're actually from
52:48
fville and um I'm hoping to hang out with them soon go ahead and check out their their shop what see what it looks
52:54
like so they're really fun to hang out with uh they've got a really cool story about
52:59
how they got going building custom vans uh I found uh another
53:07
Builder and Logan so he actually has the ecoflow system in his van and I've been
53:13
waiting to find somebody to use it in a van at a show now there's tons of Builders out there that use ecoflow um
53:20
however not many of those Builders go to these shows that I go to and it was really nice
53:26
finding a builder to just check his van out um I'll change other microphone
53:33
there we go so yeah we did a tour of his van he's got the Tetra van in floor shower pan all that good stuff um but he
53:41
gave me feedback on how long he was able to run his air conditioner off of the same system I'm putting in uh John and
53:46
Susan's van so it it confirmed everything in real life of what you know
53:52
I had kind done on paper and had learned from some video and uh not only does he not have a 48
53:59
volt AC it's a 120 volt AC and he still gets great efficiency out of it so
54:06
um yeah I mean you'll you'll see it here first guys when we do a tour of
54:11
uh um or do the operate John and Susan's van for the first
54:21
time um I one thing I did miss is I didn't get a chance for to show me the
54:26
uh control panel and how he turns things off and on and just um I know the menu I
54:33
just wanted to make a video for you guys to show you how to how it easy it is to go through the menu he did mention that
54:41
the software was updated to where it can charge the engine batteries if they get low so that kind of reverse charging I'd
54:48
heard about that but he says he's done it before um so yeah we go through his van
54:55
and then if you guys want to see something really cool there's this uh
55:05
Eugene this video was really awesome so Eugene here this next video coming
55:11
up uh he played a concert for us or like he played three sets um one of the main
55:17
two in the uh one of the main stage and then two in his FedEx van that has been renovated to have a flip out stage
55:26
where he can play live and a mobile Sound Studio where he can produce music
55:32
so the next day it was raining outside but it was really nice that he was able to open the van up and uh show us this
55:42
um this setup that he
55:49
has so let's uh let's see here all right so you go outside and
55:57
check this out this is so cool so let me get my face off of
56:06
here so yeah he flips this out he's got a stage that folds
56:12
down and he's a he's a very good singer he's a new singer too I mean he's
56:18
been doing singing for a while but um if you hear him play you'll kind of wonder where he he
56:25
came from cuz he's very
56:34
talented yeah that pops out and he's able to uh here's a bigger view of the
56:41
van he just does a bunch of shows on the road and then we hopped on the inside of
56:46
the van and then the backside is where he's got a pull out Studio that he writes music records inside his
56:53
van
56:59
then he's got a Murphy
57:14
bed it's funny that some of the vans that had the most personality uh there
57:19
there's kind of like two ways to do it um Troy for example in the first van I showed you
57:25
his van had uh you know he's a true Craftsman that has just a very good
57:32
attention to detail and that's his thing you can definitely see it in his van um
57:37
but Eugene here completely different aesthetic but still such a personal
57:42
build so his stuff is more focused on getting the music out performing not so
57:49
not saying his van is not good but not so much on the van he's just you know
57:55
uh he just builds a desk gets it done and then moves on and uh but but and by
58:02
doing that it's just it's just so cool cuz you know it's better that it's not a super
58:08
finished desk or it's better that it's just a kind of a sync that just gets the job done because it just it kind of goes
58:14
with the whole story about him on the road traveling you know just doing little uh improvements as he goes so
58:23
check out that whole video I know we played a bunch of it but kind of listen to what he says as far as you know how the how the build's
58:31
going but yeah it's it's cool who you meet at these shows I mean it's uh it's
58:37
R you'll never know that you'll run into them so it's cool when I do these videos CU I'll film the video kind of like I do
58:44
the live stream for you guys and I forget you know how in- depth the video was until I actually sit down and I edit
58:50
it and then it turns out to be like man that's such a cool memory but
58:56
um yeah but uh check him out it's Eugene dasm music.com is his uh his setup and
59:04
uh he's going this is his last uh week in Florida and I think he's actually going
59:10
to like Austin Texas or something like that over the next few weeks in March so pretty
59:16
cool um yeah guys that is pretty much it uh
59:22
one thing I also want to show you is let's exit out of
59:28
here we updated the van Builder HQ website so if you guys haven't been there in the last couple of weeks it's
59:36
really freshed uh refreshed cleaned up um so not only these videos I do live if
59:43
you guys have not checked out the blog post check out the blog post there's just tons of
59:48
information um you know let's just click on this one choosing the best camper van inverter
59:54
it's pretty much just a brain dump of all my stuff that I've learned over the years with which one I think is a good
1:00:00
one for you to get started you know what they look like difference between pure sine wave and a modified sine wave you
1:00:07
know pros and cons simple install so like this is a photo from my personal van that I still
1:00:13
have so you know making sure everything looks nice and neat um and then we got the Rigo system
1:00:21
that's the offgrid that's Ren's new offgrid solution essentially it means that they're all Bluetooth controllable
1:00:29
and that they will mesh with a central Bluetooth controller kind of
1:00:36
like what victron has um you know kind of emulates the same same thing um but
1:00:41
definitely at a different price point uh a little info on you know what
1:00:46
how many watts it's required to run certain things
1:00:53
um
1:00:58
yep and if you check out a couple blog posts and you haven't downloaded the DIY
1:01:04
vuil cheat sheet you guys have to download that it's essentially an Excel sheet that I put together of the last
1:01:11
three years of all of my shop purchases from Amazon that are van related so if
1:01:17
it's something I bought for the shop on Amazon it's on this Excel sheet it's organized with uh solar items electrical
1:01:26
fuses uh interior parts uh Hardware so all the hardware that I purchased to
1:01:33
like assemble the 8020 together um it's got you know a water pump on there uh
1:01:39
some PEX crimping tools the hydraulic PEX tool um rivet nut drill adapter kits
1:01:47
uh hydraulic crimpers for 4 out 2 O really thick gauge battery battery
1:01:53
lugs and stuff like that and so it's all on that sheet it's over 250 items right
1:01:59
now it's going to be growing we got some more stuff that we got to add to it pretty soon but definitely check it out all you got to do it's completely free
1:02:06
it's just there to help you out and put your name and email address and you'll you'll download it um I get that
1:02:14
stretch fatb from uh Amazon let me let me
1:02:23
find let's see let me let me try to find that really [Music]
1:02:30
quick
1:02:42
Amazon see let's see the
1:02:49
gray they've changed it I'm glad you're asking because they've uh
1:02:57
they changed the link to a different
1:03:12
link okay so this is the link or this is the search term you want to use and they
1:03:18
have a terrible picture I mean of all the pictures this is the worst picture for
1:03:26
Amazon um let's see here let me get there you
1:03:31
go so the photo is terrible it's called 40in wide autoc carpet
1:03:38
charcoal um you can see I've bought it twice so this is the one you want to
1:03:46
get uh and you want it to be this right here
1:04:07
here so put that in to find that one
1:04:12
um because this link changes sometimes so the last link I had I don't think it works so use the search terms to find
1:04:19
this it's a 60 by 40 so that's that's a look at it if you
1:04:24
want to screenshot it really quick that's what you want to
1:04:35
get yeah and it does it it looks really good in the van Yep this is the exact product that I
1:04:43
Ed on this back pillar uh what I like about it is it meshes really well with
1:04:49
marathon's uh heather gray fabric
1:05:04
so if we go back to this right here so this is a shot of it on
1:05:12
the so this piece right here is the four-way stretch and then this is the heather gray from Marathon so you guys
1:05:19
can see you can see the uh
1:05:25
they get they just m they match really well together they look great and then you can see here this is
1:05:32
the difference in thickness let's see here so you can see
1:05:39
this is a normal fabric that you'd get to upholster all the stuff in your van
1:05:46
and you can see how this this four-way stretch is very thick so it does have
1:05:51
quote unquote insulating value but the the the major takeaway from this fabric
1:05:58
is the the four-way stretch so if I force it in a direction it keeps this
1:06:04
memory and that memory is what I just this is some spray adhesive but you see
1:06:10
and then you can kind of tug it and see how it
1:06:17
resets yeah this exact Yep this is what I used on the foam blobs Yep this is pretty much all that I'll
1:06:24
use on phone blobs because man if you guys have ever practiced
1:06:30
pollster beginning to practice practice on something that's not your final thing
1:06:35
so I had a moment today where I'm just working on things I'm upholstering the blobs and I started on one side and
1:06:44
everything went well and I was like oh I'll just do the same thing the other side but obviously it's a mirrored and I started gluing it and
1:06:52
there's a there's a quick there's a a moment where you can actually stick the
1:06:58
super 77 adhesive on and you can take it off but just for a moment and I realized
1:07:03
that and I ripped it off and thankfully I didn't rip the foam because then you got to repair that make
1:07:10
it look good but yeah this stuff is uh this is good stuff and my personal
1:07:16
van if you if you watched a video on my personal van uh King buns thank you so
1:07:22
much appreciate it thank you that's awesome
1:07:27
um this uh this is in my personal van so let me show you a picture of that really
1:07:33
quick because this is the other the other thing that I would use it for um so you're going to hang out in
1:07:40
the van here no thank you so much for the
1:07:46
support um I'm here to help if you guys have questions you know let me know it always helps me with uh bouncing ideas
1:07:53
off or just finding a place to uh you know make make new content that's
1:08:00
helpful all right I'm going to try to find this uh video it's one of my first
1:08:06
videos I did on the channel so it should be pretty easy to get
1:08:18
to hey guys been uh reading the comments too so I really appreciate um all the
1:08:23
kind words let me know that this stuff is helpful for you guys uh I like doing
1:08:29
it it's just you know who I am teaching all that good stuff never been a teacher but uh I like
1:08:36
this format if that makes sense um all right so this is a video It's
1:08:43
called The you guys should also check out this video I'll link
1:08:49
it so this is a tour of my personal van from a while back and you can see here um hopefully you
1:08:58
can see this this is that same exact four-way stretch fabric and I've just
1:09:05
applied it directly to the sheet metal of a for Transit on the
1:09:10
inside um if you do that you can actually reclaim enough space to where
1:09:15
you can fit a fullsize mattress in with no modifications um so what this is doing
1:09:21
is this is making use of the bump out the natural bump out of or the factory bump out of the Ford Transit so these
1:09:28
are the ribs that support uh this is where a piece of glass would go if it wasn't a cargo van so this would be the
1:09:34
windows of a passenger uh low roof Ford
1:09:39
Transit so you can see put a bunch of glue on and just take that four-way stretch fabric and put it
1:09:46
in all the little nooks and crannies and we'll play a little bit of
1:09:51
this video for you so you can see um just get an idea of what it does
1:09:58
let's see what do I talk
1:10:03
uh see I'll rewind this um so you can see uh this is the
1:10:12
same place that I've left off in my van as John and Susan's van their van will
1:10:19
get done when I get back to my van to finish this back section I'm not sure when
1:10:24
with uh how busy I am in the shop at the current moment but it does give you good behind the scenes to see how um you can
1:10:33
well look look how different this low roof van is as far as a roof install versus the van I'm working on right now
1:10:40
when you don't have a curved roof it's really straightforward on how everything goes in the
1:10:47
van so but so that's a bed plat form that uh
1:10:55
fits a full- siiz mattress um if I fast forward here
1:11:02
that's uh the foam insulation that I'm using it's actually air conditioning ducting insulation it's designed for if
1:11:09
you have an air duct in your attic that sweats you put you wrap this material
1:11:15
around the pipe or the uh the return duck and it keeps it from uh sweating or
1:11:21
condensing because you're you know pulling conditioned air into your uh air
1:11:27
condition system but guess what it's perfect for a van it's cheap and it's uh it's available at Lowe's so that's what
1:11:34
I put in my van for the the ceiling again it was just I also put so that was
1:11:39
there um first and then I put a mineral wool a rock wool is essentially what I
1:11:45
there's a piece of it sticking out there so I use rock wool so I've I've changed I've gone from
1:11:51
rock wool to 3M thinlit and then everybody's really likes the havlock so
1:11:58
that's what I'm using now um funny
1:12:03
uh I had a little Sound Studio um and that's the rock wall from the
1:12:10
walls of my Sound Studio uh in one of my Apartments back in the day so I
1:12:15
repurposed it and put it in the in the van um let's see is there so that you
1:12:22
can actually see the right hand side where the four-way stretch fabric uh let's see let's just focused there you
1:12:27
go so you see I used it for the whole van I went from the back all the way down the whole entire side of the van
1:12:34
that was really the only solution to make sure I maximize the space
1:12:40
um so it's funny how you can actually reuse these videos for other
1:12:51
stuff so that's uh diesel heater that I got in there so one day guys we'll get
1:12:59
back on this build and actually really finish this up um everything works it's
1:13:05
got 200 watts of solar um that's a custom roof rack that I put on top of
1:13:11
the van so so I made that roof rack out of
1:13:18
Unistrut from Lowe's and I just painted it matte black so that's a piece of Unistrut that holds electrical conduit
1:13:25
boxes in a warehouse I just repurposed it for a roof rack cuz you can uh have
1:13:30
this adjustability you can slide stuff left to right um You can mount these uh bolts and hooks for tarps so it's
1:13:38
actually a pretty good DIY um
1:13:43
solution got the max fan in the back this is a good DIY video I mean
1:13:49
this is where this is back in the day where I was just kind of doing stuff from scratch
1:13:58
so I had taken out a whole uh what did I take out I took a whole controller out
1:14:05
or something like that so that's why that looks like a mess but anyway
1:14:11
um yeah guys that's uh pretty much going to do it for the live stream uh wanted
1:14:16
to also send you over to Odyssey custom vans currently as of filming this video
1:14:23
we have a van that's for sale which is the uh one that we took to Adventure van Expo in chattanoga Tennessee so it's the
1:14:30
shop build that we've been working on so it's a it's for sale um there's a bunch
1:14:35
of information down here if you guys would like to look at all the specs on it uh we'll be doing a detailed overview
1:14:42
video as soon as we get done with uh uh John and Susan's van the shows the
1:14:49
videos all that stuff will be circling back to this van and uh it'll be the primary focus after um their van is uh
1:15:02
finished but yeah if you are interested in purchasing this van that is my information phone number the best way to
1:15:07
