0:07
thank you hey guys welcome back to the shop we are getting ready to put down the adhesive
0:14
for our lawn sill flooring and we're going to go through everything step by step we'll do a live install at the end
0:20
of this video but I wanted to show you about the beginning Parts as far as prep goes so the first thing here that you
0:27
guys see we have a hundred pound linoleum roller and this roller is gonna
0:33
what we're going to use after we apply the lawn sill so we're going to roll it
0:38
out after we apply it and you want to make sure you get all the air bubbles out manually so when
0:44
you're actually laying down the material so just be very careful but this is the finishing touch to really create that
0:49
nice Bond however you're going to need this later in the day so you're gonna need to rent
0:56
one of these for a whole day because about three hours after three to five hours after you put in put the adhesive
1:03
down you'll need to re-roll the floor one more time so that's what we got this roller in a
1:10
second we're actually going to prep this roller and I'll explain why that's important for materials over here
1:16
we need some a 3M like Scotch Brite pads
1:22
maybe even a sanding pad and we're going to clean this roller up with denatured alcohol and we're going to sand it as
1:28
you can imagine this is used for the construction industry and I can have some Nicks and some scrapes on it in the
1:35
steel and we don't want that to cut into the floor so if there was a
1:41
sharp spot and you got 100 pounds on it that's going to cut right into your brand new floor you don't want to do
1:47
that so by simply just taking some time cleaning this off cleaning the rust and
1:52
everything off and getting all the Nicks out of it so it's nice and smooth then you can just use it as is you don't have
1:58
to worry about like wrapping this with tape or anything next thing is we have the lawn sill so inside this bucket is a
2:04
two-part part A and A Part B and it is an epoxy adhesive so it's a two part you
2:10
put the two parts together you mix it up to mix it we need to use a drill
2:17
because you with epoxy everything in here is a perfect ratio so not only do you want to
2:23
make sure everything mixes you get everything out of one bucket and everything out of the second bucket
2:28
you want to make sure you mix it very well because that is going to make sure that the reaction that it needs to
2:37
solidify is good even ready to go and we want to make sure we mix it up
2:43
very well so we need to take this bucket right here
2:48
and you can have two buckets when I first did it I mixed it in one and I poured it in another one which I should
2:54
have just done one so we're going to use this two gallon bucket from Lowe's
3:02
and we're going to put the two part in here and we're going to make sure that we mix it up very well
3:08
once we do that this will be the bucket we're going to use to pour half on one side half on the other side
3:14
we'll do half we'll flip this over first we'll trowel out half so we need to have
3:20
a u-notch trowel so this is a U.S trial it's specific to
3:25
the lawn sill process so the little grooves in here have you ever done tiled
3:31
laid out grout before for tile adhesive these ridges are specific to whatever
3:38
tile you're using as far as the thickness of the ridges and so the thickness of these ridges is really
3:44
important they're very thin but they're designed in a way to where this is going
3:49
to lay down properly so make sure you get the specific one from them
3:56
it's on their website and no affiliation here but I got all these materials
4:01
through perfectfit.com so here's the trowel
4:08
and then that's all the components we need and we're gonna go ahead and jump right on into cleaning this roller up
4:14
and keep on going with the video so we just got some paper towels and a
4:19
big old thing of denatured alcohol
4:37
I'm really just going to soak this up and just start rubbing this roller off
4:50
so we haven't even scrubbed and that's how dirty our roller is which is it is to be expected it's a rental item
4:57
what we want to do is we want to make sure like any rocks or anything and we have
5:03
is off of here what's nice about the denatured alcohol is it's also taking off any adhesive
5:11
so as you can imagine this is used for putting down floors and over here on my left side there's a
5:18
ton of adhesive so we'll just do a first cleaning
5:24
and then you can see how much dirt's on there so next what I do is I'm just going to
5:30
take this pad and I'm going to soak it denatured
5:44
and pretty much like that so I'm gonna pause the video I'm gonna get this all cleaned up move this out of the way and
5:49
then we'll jump on to the next part of the video all right we are inside the van and I
5:56
wanted to show you our next step so we've already cleaned off our linoleum roller it's outside it's good
6:03
to go now what we've done is we've already pre-cut our floor
6:09
now this is something I would suggest that you guys do anytime you're installing the floor in your van
6:14
especially one like this like a piece of sheet vinyl or the lawn seal for example
6:21
you want to do this because if you have any rolled up edges on the side and I'm going to pull get an
6:32
so you can imagine if we had our piece of Lam linoleum or cheap vinyl or whatever
6:40
we're doing here if it's curved up like this it's really going to be hard for the
6:45
roller to compress if at all this down so you get a good adhesion
6:51
with that pressure so what you want to do is any part of the van you want to cut out
6:58
against you know the battery areas maybe where your parking heater is if you have
7:05
a seat maybe a shower pan any protrusions into the van so for example this over here is for the uh
7:15
it's for the structure of the van but it's kind of in the way but we need to cut around it to make sure that everything looks nice and professional
7:22
so what we want to do is instead of this being like this and that's putting the adhesive down and doing this later
7:28
we do it when it's easier to work with not only can we lift it up to double
7:34
check what we're cutting around with the floor but we can have this pushed down and
7:40
then we can actually take our piece of upholstery in this case this adventure wagon component
7:47
and we can take this and we can actually put it down behind here
7:52
and make sure we have a nice clean fit so they're not we're not messing with it making it harder for ourselves later
7:58
when we go to put this in it's pretty much 99 there and then we can just
8:04
barely tweak it later if we need to
8:11
next we're going to make sure that we have a screw in the back end and the
8:16
screw in the front end and again we did this we discussed this over one of our live streams so you can
8:22
check back that it's in the flooring live stream playlist on the YouTube channel
8:28
but that divides our floor into two parts so this side is the side we start with
8:37
and what it allows us to do is we can simply lift this side up
8:43
roll it over when we're ready to do so we can trowel out this left side
8:51
and then once we've tried everything out we can simply roll this nice and easy
8:58
minimizing our air bubbles just rolling us nice and gently all the
9:04
way back over and then we're set for this side we can change to the right side of the van and
9:12
we can do the same thing we can also manage our time so with the
9:19
two part epoxy time is kind of your enemy it runs out very quickly as soon as you
9:26
take part a and Part B you mix them the 30 minute countdown clock starts
9:31
so you get 30 minutes of working time but remember you have to mix it all up
9:38
mix it very well you know make sure you're dressed appropriately I've got my epoxy pants on
9:45
for my last floor install which I I was walking backwards and got some epoxy on it so you know think about
9:52
ahead of time what you're going to wear um you got to get the bucket you got to
9:58
fold the floor back you got to get into the van got to get your trowel get into
10:03
position and then start so that can take anywhere from you know maybe
10:09
five ten minutes so now you only have 20 minutes left so that's 10 minutes coming
10:15
down this side and then 10 minutes coming down the other side and you want to have the time working in
10:21
your favor you don't want to rush now you are on a time crunch but
10:29
that's why you want to do these things I'm suggesting you know have the 50 50 so you can make
10:36
sure you're only working 10 minutes over here 10 minutes over here everything has an equal amount of time to set but also
10:42
you can kind of practice before you get the epoxy down so as I just did I practice rolling the
10:48
floor back we started from the front and coming down the back
10:53
um yeah do a little practice run I mean it takes five minutes
11:00
kind of know your game plan as far as how you're going to tackle it um
11:05
and not to stress you out too much but you know you only get one chance to do it but if you take your time
11:10
follow this video kind of do everything step by step uh it'll be the
11:16
best experience you can do with the uh the lawn silly that's what you get from this video
11:23
um we're gonna go ahead and in this next part we're going to open up our bucket we'll start by mixing part A
11:30
and Part B we'll set our timer and then uh yeah this will be all on video for you guys
11:36
to see uh how I do the install all right guys we're going to go ahead
11:41
and get started we're going to peel back our floor
11:47
we don't want to walk on this section because we've got it it's all clean
11:55
most of it's clean if you see a hair or anything like that make sure you get it out of the way
12:02
um I'm probably going to need a weight
12:08
to hold this down the last floor that I did was
12:16
uh heavier than this floor when we did Thomas's van so
12:26
let's see you need to get something to hold us down
12:36
so again it's all in the prep
12:43
now for video purposes I'm going to mix this stuff over here I wouldn't suggest doing that
12:51
because you want to I wouldn't do that
12:57
leave it leave it to the professionals but I'm doing it so you guys can actually see
13:03
uh what I'm doing all right so we have a little bit of weight over here and that's going to
13:09
help us let me get a little bit more weight let
13:14
me get this DeWalt there we go so it doesn't move on us
13:23
okay cameras are rolling good
13:31
so hopefully you guys can see up there let's see yeah we got we pretty much got everything here let me move up a little
13:43
that's where the camera's gonna stay you guys will get the point once I start I'll start up front and then I'll
13:49
kind of make my way back
13:58
one thing I did that's in a past live stream is they have these little pieces of tape of these holes in the floor
14:03
and these holes are where the through bolts are going through the
14:08
floor to secure the pull out slide tray so you'll want to tape over those and
14:15
then access them from the bottom up when you're ready to drill them out the
14:20
reason is we don't we want to tape it so the epoxy is not pouring down into the hole and we're having to drill through
14:27
hard epoxy believe it or not you know epoxy is pretty resilient and we don't
14:33
want that to add to our re-drilling of the hole possibly offsetting our hole
14:39
so that's why we're doing that we're going to start from the front and uh we're gonna pour it out
14:47
with a bucket and we're just going to pour it uh with enough section to work on it now
14:55
remember the longer you keep it in the bucket the faster it's going to cure so
15:02
in a perfect world we would pour the whole thing down and we would go at it but you we don't want to do that in the van we want to do step by step
15:09
also underneath here we want to trowel it really well underneath this Edge
15:15
so then when we go to flip it over and flip it on the other side we've got a nice clean line that we can continue
15:22
from so we don't want to forget that
15:30
container and open it up
15:36
let's get a little pull tab
15:58
okay when we open this up
16:21
we have our part B right here
16:26
make sure it's sealed up
16:35
and then this is kind of like a seal that's separating both sides that's what you need to have gloves make sure you
16:42
have a whole box of gloves Nitro gloves that you can
16:48
quickly quickly grab because we're going to use these and then we're going to change our gloves
16:55
okay we're going to pull this out
17:03
all right looks pretty good
17:08
I'm just making I'm going easy because I don't want to get any drips another good thing to have would be a
17:20
put a trash can right there
17:25
and before you change our gloves we're going to go ahead and start our process
17:33
so I'm gonna look on the camera and we're going to wait just a minute because I'm going to start it right on
17:39
this seven minute mark
17:46
and while we're waiting on that let's go ahead and just read the instructions one more time
17:52
so pull pour all of Part B which is this bottle
17:57
into part a allow enough time for the material to
18:03
flow completely out of the container Parts A and B are packaged to exact quantity ratios for proper curing so
18:09
always mix complete units do not add other materials to the mixture use
18:14
mechanical mixture mixer slow speed allowed to mix thoroughly to
18:21
achieve smooth homogeneous mix avoid air entrapment prolonged mixing
18:33
pot life at 73 degrees which is this room right now is approximately 30 minutes
18:40
it says do not mix more adhesive than can be used in a 30 minute period but you're we're going to do the whole
18:45
entire thing pour the adhesive
18:51
onto the substrate which is the floor immediately after mixing and spread
18:56
using the trowel do not allow adhesive to sit in the container and do not back roll the
19:02
adhesive lay the flooring into the adhesive as it has been spread take care
19:07
not to trap any air bubbles and roll in both directions with a minimum 100 pound roller
19:13
100 pound three section roller roll again two to three hours later allow no
19:19
foot traffic for a period of 24 hours after installation and 72 hours for the adhesive to fully cure before setting
19:26
heavy objects or furnishings so yeah that is our plan
19:36
all right so let's get our bottle here
19:45
and we are just going to work off of the main bucket
19:51
I think what I did last time is I transferred it so that I would make
19:58
sure I used half and half on the floor
20:03
so I actually may let's see here
20:09
let's see so we've got I'm gonna make a mark on the bucket just to indicate where
20:18
our halfway point is going to scratch a little bit of label here
20:29
and that way we can kind of at a glance no you know
20:35
how much we're using all right here we go let's check out our
20:40
time on the clock all right it's nine minutes and 55
20:52
there we go 10 minutes let's start mixing
21:25
now remember we're going to make sure that we just let this drain out of here
21:31
we need every last drop so this is what I'm talking about with the
21:37
uh working time you know we're already into a minute of the working time but we haven't done
21:43
anything so we just need to make sure that
21:50
we get all these drips out
22:24
okay and I'm going to close this up just for a second
22:30
because we need to start mixing
22:39
go ahead and change my gloves
23:31
so hopefully I'll mention this later but anywhere that when you pre-cut the floor
23:36
out if you have the floor come in too much and there's not just a eighth of an inch of an overhang that's where we want
23:42
to make sure we uh we watch out for because we don't want the epoxy oozing out and then when we put our roller on
23:49
there the roller catches a little bit of it and then rolls it onto our brand new floor
23:55
so hopefully we will uh go over that
24:25
I'm just going to do a quick pause and
24:30
it's the OCD part of me but it's okay we're gonna double check to make sure that there wasn't anything left
24:55
so now's had some time to drain let's see how much we got coming out okay yeah so quite a bit
25:04
so as you remember before that was still in there so
25:11
to sit aside let it drain with upside down and then when it gets to a point to where it's not dripping anymore just
25:18
like this and you know you've got it all out take your trash can
25:24
put it in our trash can and we don't need our gloves right now
25:29
because we're just mixing let's check out our time
25:43
coming up on five minutes
25:51
so this is not where I want it yet so we're gonna keep mixing for about another minute
26:53
okay and then I'm just gonna let this sit on the trash can because it's go time
27:01
all right let that sit right there now don't worry about anything else
27:08
it's go time we have mixed for six minutes
27:18
so we need to start trailing out epoxy right now because now we've got about seven minutes per side
27:27
let's double check your feet make sure you're not bringing anything crazy into the van and let's go ahead and start up here
27:44
foreign all right and this can drip on the floor
27:50
so don't worry about that but we need to get this over here and start working it in these corners
28:34
if you feel like you're rushing right now take this first couple minutes
28:40
and just get familiar with trailing this stuff out because if you've never done it before
28:46
you've never done it before so
28:55
uh but definitely want to get these edges
30:15
make sure we get it right on our now we drew a line or previously
30:22
and that line allowed us to see where the halfway point was so it's
30:27
just a it's just a marker marker line [Music]
30:48
like you feel like you're running out it's time to go ahead and get some more
31:28
[Music] and in a perfect world if this stuff is uh
31:35
if you can pour that like I'm doing big and open that will allow it to not cure as fast
31:43
because the curing process is it's heating up so if you can spread it out
31:51
it uh you know somewhat cools it so the ratcheting takes it's not as fast
33:57
and also be mindful of what you're touching you know if you're in the moment uh if I'm touching this piece of plastic
34:06
you know you might be touching something you don't want to get epoxy on
34:11
just be careful of that
34:28
if it goes over the edge it's not the end of the world as long as it's something that
34:35
is not gonna be that big of a deal and then where it settles try to get
34:42
these lumps out of it before you get too far that you can't come back so I got some
35:07
and I'm going to take this stuff all the way back to the back
35:13
because again what's happening is trying to
35:19
trying to get our time make the most of our time
36:08
you find that it's not sticking in Places You'll you may need to Bear Down
36:18
kind of smush it in and then it'll kind of create it'll create that uh bond with the surface
36:53
okay so now you got the hang of it you do want to start
36:58
working quicker trust me on this
37:08
so I can't see what time it is right now I already know that I need to be speeding up
37:14
my process but I don't want to speed up enough to
37:20
where I mess up and leave these big lumps because in about two minutes I'm going
37:25
to flip this over onto this other side
37:44
now what you're going to feel as time goes on is you're going to feel the epoxy start
37:51
to thicken up foreign
37:57
that's why I keep talking about all this about time
40:01
and one thing would be good to mention is if you do have a side that thinks it's going to be tougher like this side had a lot of
40:08
uh different places like cutouts and stuff like that
40:13
you may want that one to be the the first one you do
40:27
to use what I have because I don't want to pour any more out onto the side here
41:03
okay so we're looking good we're ready to roll
41:12
get this inside corner
41:21
all right good good good
41:28
balance our Trail on the top of our jug I'm going to start in the middle
41:36
and make sure let's take our gloves off
41:41
we don't want to get any epoxy on our new floor
41:47
okay so we're just going to slowly move this over
42:19
and it's not going to Super suck it down so don't worry if it's not super super exact
42:30
because we're we're also going to roll it
42:38
okay there we go so don't worry about that we need to
42:44
jump on this other side quickly
42:55
next thing we need to do is take our screwdriver get our screws out
43:01
and we're helping us make everything straight
43:13
now this is where my knee last time got into the epoxy
43:19
so learn from my mistakes
43:25
but now we want to get this one out
43:36
screws have done their job and we want to move this back further
43:42
there we had it so we expose the epoxy that we just put down
43:49
all right quickly get another set of gloves on check our time
43:57
we got seven minutes look at that
44:03
see I told you guys I've done this before
44:11
okay let's go ahead pour this out
44:21
pour it there then I'm gonna go ahead and I'm gonna pour it back here
44:30
and this is going to help us ever so slightly with our
44:36
cure time it's not going to make a big of a difference but it'll be better than nothing
45:11
this is the best camera angle that I can do I don't have anywhere to put the camera
45:16
where I'm not bent over put in epoxy on the floor so
45:39
see without the magic of editing you guys get to see really how fun this is
45:46
of course this should be fun if you guys are getting to the part where you're putting epoxy on the floor I mean man
45:54
I'm in your van build is going good
46:10
and just don't forget about the edges you know the edges are where the floor wants to curl up
46:29
putting plastic down to Mark areas off you know in case you had drips
46:35
I do have one drip on the back um but it's okay I can take some
46:40
denatured alcohol and I can get that off pretty quickly but whatever you do just
46:46
let it sit and wait and come back for it don't
46:51
don't mess anything up don't don't take a phone call
46:58
get the end to the timing on this
47:07
so what I'm doing now I find that using the edge of the trail as you guys can see
47:14
it just it works better for me I'm not sure why
47:21
you think the wider part would have been easier to work with but I know that's just the way I'm doing it
47:31
and remember if you're getting high spots go ahead and take care of those as you're coming backwards because you're not going to be able to
47:48
just making sure I got these edges really good
49:03
so we get a big hole right here where we uh drill through the floor to have all our wires come out
49:10
we want to make sure we have adhesive on there but we don't want to get it all over the wires because
49:17
remember when we come back through here to roll it's going to squeeze all that adhesive
49:24
up under the floor now that doesn't mean you can cheat and not put it down evenly
49:30
but you do want to get it to where
49:39
it's all the way around the hole because when you mess with this epoxy you'll see you'll smush it down on one side
49:47
and if it doesn't like the area it'll actually kind of almost like it's like
49:54
I don't want to say like like a waterproof but if you imagine someone's waterproof the water kind of beads off there'll be areas where the epoxy will
50:01
kind of beat off foreign
50:12
if you saw what I did right there I'm just kind of I need some extra epoxy so I go
50:17
and grab it from uh just that extra that I poured out
50:28
and then after we do this remember we're going to immediately roll
50:59
and usually when you're three quarters away done that's when the epoxy is really going to
51:05
start setting up on you so no Panic it's just going to be a
51:11
little bit harder to work with and trowel out
51:25
foreign so don't try not to rush it too much
51:37
one thing about this middle seam is
51:43
you'll probably want to put a lot there but you don't want to do that you want to keep it as even as you've been doing
51:51
the whole rest of the van
51:59
yeah so right now I can really feel this getting sticky
52:09
foreign so this is kind of when the epoxy is doing its magic it's turning into that adhesive it's not really
52:18
making it too easy to spread
52:32
and as you're coming back over to level things out you may want to wipe your Trail off like I'm doing
52:39
so that you're not you know holding that much epoxy on there and you can actually
52:54
so right here usually every time this is right where epoxy starts sitting up on me
53:04
and I gotta keep on going can't really do anything about it except
53:10
work faster in the beginning but
53:15
I'm not installing the floor every single day so you know I still got to get back in the
54:15
so if you just saw me what I did is I got that Center transition
54:21
the way I wanted it and I'm kind of coming out from it
54:29
I mean I would say do you do your own technique but uh this worked really good for me
54:37
so maybe just keep it especially if you
54:44
you know just doing one van
54:50
you can change it up when you do your second van how about that
55:02
remember as we're getting towards the end there's any place that you feel like
55:08
I'm running into the camera hold on
55:14
if there's any place you feel like you need to get the bubbles out now is definitely the time to do that
55:27
so you can see the stuff in the bucket it's barely coming out
55:34
all right let's see if that's gonna be enough for me to finish the floor out here
55:46
my focus on the edges first and then I'll do the rest of the floor
56:35
s include this center part now this black hole right here this is
56:40
our lift for our van uh our spare tire
56:46
typically when you're doing a van build like this you've upgraded
56:52
the tires and you're no longer working with a factory
56:57
tire size so you no longer need it however
57:02
in the event for some reason in the future you wanted to go back to a tire size
57:07
you need to know the location of that
57:13
you know kind of where it's at and all this this is going to be covered
57:18
by the top layer there's a marking and I took photos that'll go in the owner's manual
57:26
that I create and it allows you unless you know the exact location of this hole
57:32
so when you come back to find it when you need to
57:39
you'll be able to locate it
57:46
all right so we're just getting our extra excess excess
57:53
over here to make sure we don't have bumps the roller will take out some minimal
57:59
bumps don't rely on the roller to take out everything that you've
58:06
not made sure is level
58:16
okay all right so we proportion that
58:21
perfectly so now we're just going to go on this end
58:27
make sure it is very good because one's back of the van but two
58:35
we just want to make sure we do a good job all right so I'm just coming around here
58:44
anything I think I missed just leveling out
58:52
I can't take too much of my time there we go we got one more little spot
58:58
okay all right guys that's it we can't touch this anymore we have to roll it right now
59:05
take our gloves off make sure we didn't step in any epoxy
59:10
I'm Gonna Roll Over nice and easy
59:16
and then we're going to get our big roller um
59:21
so just in case I'm going to take these shoes off
59:29
but we know we don't have any epoxy we may have stepped on all right so we're gonna do this back
59:36
first seems like it wants to go down first
59:41
and we'll come back up for the front and watch where everything's going
59:47
this shower pan we want to make sure it's not kind of cupping that edge
59:55
like that kind of lift this up all right come on this side
1:00:03
all right so what we can do
1:00:08
we'll just use some lightweight and get this tacked down so
1:00:14
it doesn't shift on this it's not really going to shift too much
1:00:19
then we're going to get the roller we're gonna start on the inside go to the outside
1:00:30
and trust me you will be crazy sweaty after you do this
1:00:37
all right how are we on time all right we are
1:00:44
nine minutes past so it is possible that you're going to get a little bit of extra time
1:00:52
all right so I got a there is a spot of epoxy on the floor I need to make sure
1:00:58
that I don't touch that all right I'm gonna bring our 100 pound
1:01:04
roller in on the side door now let's start rolling
1:01:44
that's pretty much it what we'll do in uh probably
1:01:50
two or three hours like it says we'll come back through we'll roll it one more time and that's
1:01:56
it then it needs to set up for 24 hours minimum if you're going to start putting weight on it like installing your
1:02:02
battery system furniture and stuff you really need to wait you know three days sounds like a lot but let this thing set
1:02:09
up do its thing and uh you're really gonna enjoy it and it went in really well
1:02:16
um there was a little bit of air right here that I heard come out and that's it
1:02:21
um it was everything else is perfect perfect what you may notice is you may notice
1:02:28
now that it's down that there may be a shift in an area so for example
1:02:34
over here I've got a little bit of a shift once you got pushed down
1:02:39
it actually came over just a bit and uh
1:02:46
so the back is up I mean it's like an eighth of an inch but just just know that that might be something for you to
1:02:52
look out for when you're doing your flooring is it it might actually shift
1:03:00
so yeah just to be cognizant of that and yeah that is uh that's where we're
1:03:06
at we will uh re-roll and then um that'll
1:03:12
be it for this insulin install but yeah if you guys have any questions on installing a lawn still flooring that
