hey guys welcome to the live stream we
0:01
are working on John and Susan's van and
0:03
we're there in the last couple days of
0:05
this van build so I'm going to do some
0:07
small live streams on the phone uh but
0:09
the other time is going to be spent
0:10
knocking out this van uh before I cover
0:13
this up so you guys don't see the behind
0:15
the scenes part um I wanted to show you
0:18
this modification on the van that I'm
0:20
doing it's very simple but it's I think
0:23
very powerful if you want to have some
0:26
sort of Step light on the cargo door
0:30
when you come walk into your
0:32
van so over here on the right hand
0:36
side we have uh this piece of plastic so
0:41
I'm actually going to walk onto the
0:43
other side of the van so you can
0:45
see uh what it looks like when it's put
0:47
into
0:48
place um so essentially what we're doing
0:51
is we are putting back in the interior
0:54
Plastics on the
0:55
front and just wrapping that off so we
0:57
can continue progress on the van
1:01
so when you open your door your
1:03
van you have this light right here so
1:06
this light lights up your step so that
1:08
when you get into the van you can you
1:12
know see how you're getting into the
1:14
van now what I wanted to do is I wanted
1:17
to Branch off of this circuit and create
1:22
a uh step light off of that
1:27
circuit um the challenges with this
1:29
circuit is it's pretty
1:31
finicky in that uh if you blow blow the
1:35
fuse on this circuit it's it's pretty
1:37
hard to go into the dash and find the
1:41
fuse to actually replace to repair it so
1:45
a couple things that I do um when I'm
1:48
working in the van is one let's just
1:51
look up here in the ceiling really quick
1:54
so in the ceiling of a Ford Transit
1:56
you've got a power cable that runs the
2:00
length of the van supplies power to the
2:03
rear tail lights and all that stuff well
2:06
that power
2:08
wire also controls all your dome lights
2:10
on top of the van now you need to
2:13
disconnect that wire up top and you need
2:17
to safely move it away of any screws or
2:19
anything in the ceiling because what
2:21
you're going to do is you're going to
2:23
short it out and not only is it going to
2:25
short the cargo lights in the top but
2:28
back here in the back
2:33
we have our um ignore this this is my
2:36
little testing battery for their
2:39
circuitry but right here this is the
2:42
grounding
2:44
wire
2:45
for uh all of the rear cargo lights so
2:49
the ceiling lights the rear cargo lights
2:52
the tail lights the backup lights all
2:54
that good stuff so this thing right here
2:58
it's actually three wires
3:00
and they're individually drilled into
3:03
the van so if I came over here this is
3:06
an easier way to explain it right
3:08
underneath this piece of metal there are
3:10
three holes and they are the three
3:13
grounding
3:15
straps hey thanks so much for uh
3:17
stopping by on the live stream um so
3:21
these three
3:23
holes uh are the grounding holes and you
3:26
got to bolt to them so once you bolt to
3:28
them the whole circuit comes alive but
3:31
if you disconnect this
3:34
one without grounding it
3:38
um the cargo lights won't work so you
3:42
just got to make sure you do
3:44
that um so this needs to be your only
3:47
ground in the rear of the van and then
3:49
anything that you've done in the ceiling
3:52
I would suggest terminating in the
3:54
ceiling so that you
3:56
don't have loose ends essentially so
4:00
that brings us to the last three pieces
4:03
which are these two dome lights
4:05
here and then our door light and
4:10
then this door light um so actually
4:15
think I ran out of time I'm try to see
4:18
if I can turn this back on really
4:28
quick all right so I'm going to have to
4:30
open some more
4:31
doors so let's talk while we are closing
4:34
some doors
4:39
here take all this stuff apart you guys
4:41
can check out the van while I'm doing
4:47
this okay let's see
4:50
here got that one
4:53
shut all right let's see if I can get
4:55
these lights turned back
4:58
on
5:03
there we go okay so here we go we've got
5:07
all those wires in the cly terminated
5:09
and now we get to the whole point of
5:10
this video so this is the step light for
5:16
this part of the floor and what we're
5:19
going to do is we're going to tap into
5:23
this little circuit board right
5:25
here and so this circuit board um hello
5:29
how are you
5:31
doing uh this circuit board right here
5:35
is got the positive and the ground
5:39
labeled on the circuit board and that's
5:41
important because this is a pain in the
5:42
butt to find the fuse if you do blow
5:44
this it's up underneath the dash
5:48
extremely difficult to to get to so what
5:52
we want to do here is we take this
5:54
circuit board and we've got the ground I
5:57
know that's hard to focus on just trust
6:00
me this bottom one is the positive so it
6:02
says
6:03
B+ this top one is the ground so the
6:07
ground is a black wire the positive is
6:09
this blue
6:11
wire with this little uh this white wire
6:15
with this blue line and so what we're
6:17
doing is we're taking that uh the power
6:20
supply wire with the blue wire white
6:24
line and then we're taking a red wire
6:26
and we're jumping off of that um the
6:29
Third position is just continuing that
6:31
circuit that we cut into so we're taking
6:34
the positive and then over here we're
6:36
taking the ground and this is the cool
6:38
part so check this out so this connects
6:42
to this aluminum housing LED it's this
6:47
thing is so awesome so not only is it
6:49
fully metal but what this will do is you
6:52
can see how it's providing light but it
6:55
won't shine in your
6:56
face so this little cargo light I'm
6:59
using this and all kinds of parts in the
7:01
vans that I build but this is actually
7:03
going to come over
7:05
here and it is going
7:08
to we have our uh ABC rig floor
7:13
trim and what we're going to do with
7:15
that floor trim is we're going to uh
7:18
drill a hole and mount this light into
7:21
that floor
7:22
trim so that when we actually
7:27
uh if I get this to sit
7:30
here so when we come into the van this
7:33
foot well will be lit up uh cuz some
7:38
other vans that I built there's no light
7:39
here because you've taken out the cardio
7:42
lights so even though you have a switch
7:43
to turn your ceiling lights on to get in
7:45
the van you usually have to step into
7:47
the van to make that happen whereas if
7:49
you just open the door this light will
7:51
come on and um yeah it'll be a nice
7:57
little feature to your
7:58
van
7:59
um since everybody's watching really
8:01
quick what I'm going to do is I'm going
8:03
to do a like a 60-second walk through of
8:07
where we're at so far with with the
8:11
build so as you guys can see here we
8:13
have uh our wall panels are
8:17
in the left and the right hand
8:20
side we've got the window pills all
8:24
upholstered and trimmed out we've got
8:26
our bolts here for our Shelf that we're
8:29
going to bolt
8:30
in we've got our reading lights right
8:35
there and then I still have to bolt that
8:37
in but I need that special drill bit
8:41
um to uh drill the bottom
8:44
holes next we have the really cool part
8:48
of the van which is this
8:50
uh this IKEA bed rail system that I
8:54
devised into the
8:55
van and there's a lot of stuff happening
8:58
behind the scenes so basically what we
9:01
have is there's a/2 in piece of Baltic
9:04
Birch ply that is Riv nutted and bolted
9:09
into the structure of the van two places
9:12
there two places there and then behind
9:15
this panel you have a quar inch piece of
9:18
plywood and that is what these top bolts
9:22
are tagging
9:24
into um so once those are bolted into
9:27
this structure is extremely strong
9:30
so one of these rails can actually hold
9:32
two people but we did five the fifth
9:36
one's not in yet and we did that so that
9:38
we could
9:40
um actually you know span across the van
9:44
and then give us a nice a lot of room
9:47
underneath the van for uh the bikes that
9:50
they would like to haul in this
9:53
van so the Baltic Birch panels are
9:56
extremely strong now coming over here to
9:58
the Eco flow
10:00
we've got a bolt going into the
10:02
structure of the van there and then we
10:04
got a bolt going into the structure van
10:06
up over here so you see these two
10:09
provide a really good foundation for
10:12
keeping this nice and strong for the uh
10:16
the power hub
10:18
itself then we got our ecoflow battery
10:20
over there and uh the good news is all
10:24
the wires are run they're all labeled
10:26
that's finished so all we have to do is
10:29
strip them put them into the
10:31
connectors Strip This connect it into
10:34
this box and then we pop it into a box
10:37
we're building this
10:40
week um so that's pretty much it is as
10:43
it is for the
10:44
interior uh this is the
10:46
trolino uh medium or M toilet I think
10:50
this is the size of it so this is what
10:53
they're going to be using uh I think
10:54
it's
10:55
excellent it even has a uh soft closed
10:58
lid
11:00
which is pretty
11:02
fancy and it's very lightweight so we'll
11:06
talk about more of that later we did
11:09
finish the floor so we put in uh the
11:12
lawn
11:15
seal uh black lava I think is
11:19
the is what we have for it it looks
11:24
fantastic and then we are finishing it
11:26
off with the um
11:30
ABC rig trim
11:33
pieces uh so this is finished the last
11:36
thing we need to do here is we're going
11:38
to do Marine adhesive on these little
11:41
corrugations and then we're just going
11:42
to push straight down the floor
11:46
step um so here is the step
11:54
itself and what's really nice about this
11:56
is I was standing at event it was
11:58
pouring down rain at the door open open
11:59
showing off my other van outside and
12:02
this had about a/ inch of water in it
12:04
and that's just a good piece of mind
12:06
because this can hold water it can drain
12:09
out here um as long as the water is not
12:12
getting Above This section
12:14
which you would be pretty much flooded
12:17
at that point um it just make sure that
12:20
your van doesn't get all messed up
12:22
inside but back to the Marine adhesive
12:26
we use that to put the step in because
12:28
it's slightly flexible and so that way
12:31
it doesn't crack if you used a
12:34
construction adhesive for
12:36
example uh it would crack over time
12:39
because the van actually does flex when
12:41
it drives so again that's something to
12:43
think about your
12:45
floor using something like that Marine
12:47
adhesive is going to help the van be a
12:49
van because this is a a vehicle so
12:53
believe it or not you are going to have
12:55
some torsion and flex in the floor as
12:57
you're riding and all that
12:59
needs to be taken in
13:02
consideration
13:03
but um let's see what else we've got
13:06
some LTR over here that we're going to
13:08
be putting by the jump seat this is our
13:11
microwave fridge stack
13:13
area and then we will also be cutting
13:18
out our templates for the kitchen
13:23
galy and uh yeah I think that's pretty
13:26
much an update but I just wanted to show
13:27
you this really cool Cold Light and how
13:31
that gets into the
13:35
uh makes it way into the van van step so
13:40
that light will actually be drilled
13:43
into this area right here and bolted
13:47
straight in so I think it's going to be
13:48
really
13:50
cool all right guys that's going to do
13:51
it for our live stream thank you so much
13:53
for watching this quick one we'll have
13:55
some more coming through uh throughout
13:57
the week as we get this build knocked
13:59
out and uh make sure you guys are
14:01
subscribed hit that notification Bell so
14:03
you don't miss when I'm going live in
14:05
the shop as we work on this van um also
14:08
comments are always welcome if you guys
14:10
have any questions on Van builds or DIY
14:13
uh topics um if you want to there is a
14:16
DIY van build cheat sheet that I have
14:19
designed it is completely free it is the
14:22
last three years of all of my Amazon
14:23
purchases basically put into an Excel
14:25
sheet that is easy to download
14:28
completely free and it might help you
14:29
get a jump start on your van conversion
14:31
by looking at some products that you uh
14:34
need to look at so like solar panels
14:36
fuses wires uh water pumps batteries
14:40
stuff like that so check it out it's on
14:42
Van Builder hq.com there's a link to the
14:45
DIY van build cheat sheet just click on
14:47
it put your name and email address it'll
14:49
come straight to your inbox and I really
14:51
think it'll help you out on your custom
14:53
van build all right guys that is going
14:54
to do it for the shop today um I might
14:58
do another one later this afternoon so
15:00
stay tuned thank you guys so much for
15:02
watching and we'll see you in the next
15:04
