1:21
hey guys welcome back to live stream tonight we're going to be finishing up taking out the bed of my Ford Transit so
1:29
on this left hand side uh a deer ran into the van so I was planning this summer to do
1:38
what I'm doing right now and I've got a opportunity to yesterday and today to work on this so
1:45
if you guys are wondering um how the bed was designed in the back of my van uh you'll be able to see it as I
1:51
disassemble it um earlier on in this build which was a long time
1:56
ago uh I didn't actually document how I bu built this um it was before I was
2:02
doing this fulltime so you get to see it kind of in Reverse so what we're working
2:08
with is a Ford Transit 2019 low roof 148 in and this platform
2:15
back here was where I had a full-size uh mattress uh for the bed of the vehicle
2:21
what I did in the last video is we took out the kitchen Galley um and toolbox
2:26
that was in there and tonight we're going to be taking out this uh the bed rails and support system and the reason
2:33
I'm doing this is the body shop in order to repair this van um and without having
2:40
to take apart the rear panels they're going to need access to uh behind the
2:45
wheel well here and as well as the inside of the B on both the driver um both areas on the driver side
2:53
so tonight what we're going to do is we're going to remove the bed and the partition panel in the middle of the the
3:01
van um that's the goal tonight so let's go ahead and hop over here and just get
3:08
started taking stuff apart um as usual if you guys have any questions uh just hop on in the chat I'd
3:15
be happy to answer them can anything to do with with Vans van building um happy
3:21
to answer that um got a different camera lens here that I'm working with so shot
3:28
might look better tonight
3:36
possibly so where we left off was we were taking off this
3:41
panel and this was uh what covered the refrigerator it had a
3:49
bit of the overhead shelving and had just had this really nice contour line
3:54
so the way that I got this contour line is uh I used a piece of foam
4:00
cut out the general shape and then all you do is push it in trace it out with a pencil uh cut it out and then you just
4:07
dial it in to you get it really nice once you're finished to take that like
4:12
um let's see what was it uh poly ISO uh anyway the pink foam you can get
4:22
like at Home Depot uh Lowe's has some but it's I think it's like a green color
4:28
anyway that gets you a nice uh template to trace out and then you can get this uh piece of wood cut out
4:35
and then upholstered so that's how this panel got
4:42
done so yesterday we finished up with getting all the uh rear Electronics
4:56
unplugged n NOA come here that's just me making
5:08
noise so we've got our battery battery monitor we just took it
5:13
out got our carbon oxide detector control for our diesel
5:21
heater and this van had just the simple Amazon one
5:26
installed which for DIY it's it's great um but if you're getting a professional
5:33
build uh I would only put in a Webasto or an SAR heater um just for reliability
5:40
and
5:47
safety so I'm going to hop in and get the rest of the uh little plastic fittings taken out
6:12
and then when I get down to the diesel heater tank in the back of the van what I'm going to do is I'm going to try to
6:17
resupport it I'm actually not going to completely remove it at the moment
6:36
so the goal of this is just to get the van set up to where the body shop can access the
6:43
interior and get those dents popped out and then kind of do their thing they're definitely going to have
6:50
to repaint the whole driver side uh portion of the van but yeah I just thought this video might
6:56
be interesting to you so that uh if you do have some significant damage to your van
7:03
this is something that you might have to consider doing
7:09
so in your van design um just having accessibility to stuff like this
7:16
sometimes it's not possible so sometimes you actually might have a van build where um this whole site is built in and
7:24
it just kind of comes with a territory and doing custom work um
7:30
so if you have something that's built in and you can't remove it uh that
7:37
shouldn't deter you from not doing the uh the build itself
8:29
this carpet that I'm pulling off this is just outdoor carpet gray um this stuff that's you know used
8:36
on bass boats uh outdoor porches super cheap easy to work with
8:43
it's pretty uh it's very thick so it's thicker than
8:48
Marathon fabric but it's good for DIY you can
8:55
pick it up at Lowe's Home Depot I think what I got specifically was Home
9:01
Depot
9:37
now the back of the van I built it with a ton of L brackets back here this uh before I did pocket hole
9:45
screws or the Craig jig type thing and in some cases uh even when you
9:53
do the Craig screw it's good to reinforce parts of your van
10:00
so for John and Susan's B for example uh a lot of their stuff was
10:06
um you know made like traditional cabinet making where wood glue cek
10:11
screws for all the joints but then when I installed it for safety purposes I put
10:17
uh I used L brackets um real chunky El brackets and bolted that into the van's
10:25
uh chassis itself and uh the flooring system

11:23
okay so next part we're going to take these this bigger piece of fly wood out
11:30
so this is just one solid piece here not sure how much you can see it on the
11:42
camera this is the only piece covering our bed rails
12:01
if you notice I don't have any mold or anything like that on here this was not treated or anything
12:07
not sealed just raw wood with that carpet uh glued on top of
12:13
it so this is almost three or four years and uh you
12:19
know I've had all kinds of stuff on the bed the bed itself and only thing that's behind here is just a little bit of dirt
13:05
[Music]
13:12
okay and this is just a half inch half inch piece of
13:18
plywood and I think I had to come through the D door over here to get this
13:25
in and out
13:52
I do want to reuse the four-way stretch carpet so I'm trying not to completely destroy it
14:50
okay now you can see the bed rails now these are not ideal because these are two by or one by ones or 2 by
14:57
tws um you'd want to use probably a 2x4 or
15:02
even the Ikea method for a DIY as far as uh rails that go
15:09
across CU these are not the way that I did this um had to do
15:15
with clearance I had a speaker that I was transporting back and forth and this I
15:21
needed a half an inch so I couldn't turn the uh the width sideways and the transition where the
15:29
bed goes needed to be flat so when I take these out you'll see
15:35
what I'm talking about I have two uh 2 by tws on the left and right
15:41
hand side that are bolted into the chassis of the van and that is what I'm uh using to attach these pieces
15:59
a
16:39
got a little frame over here that I used to hold the tank in place and just upholstered it
17:29
a
18:06
[Music]
19:02
so this just a simple it's just you know just plywood 2x4s 2 by
19:11
twos so you really can just do a really simple build
19:39
now I will have to address this tank uh I do need to remove it but I'm
19:44
going to do that
19:53
tomorrow so hopefully that will keep that in place until tomorrow
20:03
um take this tire out of here
20:59
and we're not going to be reusing this so uh we're not worried about stripping
21:05
anything or do anything like
21:17
that so yeah these bed rails are just plain old now these are weird these
21:24
are not 2x4s these are uh uh one by twos I guess you would
21:31
call [Music]
21:37
it this was all done during the pandemic so uh 2x4s were a little wild pricewise
21:52
[Music]
22:14
is
22:20
[Music]
23:13
now I still got a lot of wires back here that I'm going to have to kind of take care of one by one
23:26
[Applause] [Music]
23:52
[Music]
23:58
a
24:43
[Music]
25:09
so you can see on this uh left side what we have is this wood Rail and if you were doing
25:16
something in your van just super simple there's are these uh holes drilled into the side of the
25:24
board Transit and you can actually take a bolt and a washer push it through the
25:30
backs side and then you can bolt in uh you can bolt I've done it with a 8020
25:35
reil so aluminum uh piece of angle iron wood and
25:41
it just get you a solid attachment point to build off of in this case we're
25:47
building off of it for the uh um for the bed system
26:02
[Music]
26:28
a [Music]
27:54
[Music] right
28:58
e
29:49
okay I'm back went to the other side of the shop uh let's see so this might be more challenging
29:56
than I thought cuz that fuel line has got fuel o in it
30:05
and want to see how I want to take it out without getting diesel all over the van
30:26
H this might be a short live stream guys so while I am working
30:34
on figuring out how to get this tank out if you guys have any questions put that
30:39
in the chat while I'm working on this uh little situation over here with a
30:48
diesel anyway so if you guys are just watching now we are disassembling my personal Ford Transit because we need to
30:55
do some uh body repairs after a encounter with a deer and uh yeah it's required me to
31:05
basically take take the build out of the van to have them have access to the inner sides of these uh panels to push
31:12
the dent out and actually do the repair correctly um it's not a superficial Dent
31:20
the deer kind of went down the whole entire side of the van so it kind of sucks but I wanted to got this van out anyway
31:29
because uh I'd like to be able to have my uh motorcycle come up in uh be
31:37
strapped down into the van and transport it instead of having a rear hitch mounted
31:43
transport so that's cool because we'll be putting a floor system like we do in all of our customer builds in here so
31:50
just clean floor um we're going to panel the walls
31:58
um I'm considering keeping this four-way stretch carpet uh visible in the
32:05
back um and but the bed system i' I'd like to have a bed system to where I can
32:10
still have a motorcycle in here and then have a bed over here maybe more like a bench
32:17
seat um that's the compromise you have with building van is you know do you want a
32:22
fixed bed do you want a bed that can be taken out so you can put furniture or you know stuff or do you want kind of
32:30
like a hybrid where you have this equipment in the van but you still have room to do your sleeping
32:37
Arrangement um you know for at least like two people on the left hand side
32:46
so we'll have to see where that's going to be uh how that's going to work
32:52
out um what to do
33:10
all right guys well what we're going to do is we're going to call it for tonight on this uh this little demo
33:19
um I'm going to get a I'm going to get some buckets and stuff set up so I can actually drain this diesel out of here
33:27
take the line off run the line through the panel I made it to where there's like one hole drilled in the panel
33:32
there's not like a a u Notch so I can't take the panel out unless I feed the
33:37
line through um so I'm going to handle that
33:43
we'll probably get back to this on Monday and so we'll check that off the
33:48
list we'll get this partition out of the way and then I'll show you guys uh how I mounted this bed rail um what's behind
33:57
these two panels and kind of what the plan is going forward cuz the van has to go to the body shop on Monday so
34:05
um yeah I might do some filming tomorrow all right guys that's going to be it uh
34:10
