hey guys welcome to live stream tonight this is going to be a very long live stream so you you guys have plenty of
0:30
time to ask any question that you have on camper van Electrical uh behind me is
0:36
Glacier we are taking apart the power system over here
0:42
um the new customer went with a second alternator
0:48
and uh that's awesome it's going to charge this van up super quick however
0:53
to get this to be nice and neat and a professional install with all the wiring that has to go in here uh we're going to
1:00
have to change some things we're going to have to take out all the batteries um
1:05
but when we do that we're going to do something called a top balance where we're going to charge the all the
1:10
batteries make sure they're all charged up 100% before we put them back in um
1:17
and while we're doing that we're going to reroute some power um we're going to go in and attach uh some connectors to
1:24
the wake speed regulator so what we're going to be doing is we're working with a nation's
1:30
alternator um that nation's alternator kit comes with a wake speed regulator
1:35
which is essentially the communication between the alternator and the battery
1:41
so it's what manages the the voltage um and the charge profile so when you call
1:47
Nations alternator they'll get some information from you they'll ask for your amp hours they'll ask what type of
1:53
battery you have whether it's you know batter born uh we have the Renegy smart lithium um each one of those batteries
1:59
has a different charging profiles so they'll actually load it up into the wake speed regulator for you um I don't
2:05
know the magic behind how they actually do it with the regulator but when you get the regulator you have like a
2:10
sticker on there that has the name of your battery and the uh charging amp hours um with a bar code and I'm
2:17
assuming that's for future you know customer support type of thing but we're
2:23
going to be taking all this apart and it's going to take me a while so in typical van Builder HQ fashion I'm going
2:30
to just do a it's almost like a marathon stream tonight um I'm not sure how many hours it's going to take me but I need
2:36
to get this checked off the list because I'm very close to wrapping up everything underneath the van sealing it up sealing
2:43
the power system up so if I can knock that out tonight on the live stream then
2:49
I can move on to uh the two other things that I have in this van which is uh
2:55
tying in the plumbing on the sink and then uh cutting out our two openings
3:01
here for our rear shower and um and then just tying in the finished plumbing uh
3:08
for the plumbing side we won't talk about this in that talk about it in this live stream um but what we had is
3:16
instead of using the gray tank the 7 gallon gray tank that we had in the van
3:22
um before the van was actually purchased uh now that Brian and Robin this is
3:27
their new adventure van we upgraded to a 16 gon Northwest conversion tank that's underneath the passenger side um the
3:35
fitting to go through the floor has to be in a specific area and I wasn't
3:41
flexible in where I can move it so I had a dedicated spot that it had to go in and that has changed some things up
3:48
um so I'm working on getting that all taken care of um but yeah so these two
3:54
are the two things left uh so we'll go over that in another live stream later
4:00
um what we're going to be doing tonight is just focusing on the electrical system a
4:07
Nova um and then yeah so we're going to be taking this apart so if you guys have questions
4:14
with 12vt systems uh we've got links distributor we've got shunt from victron
4:20
we got a bunch of cables and stuff like that I actually are am I have a camera that is an overhead shot let me get that
4:27
fixed we'll fix that in just a second um but
4:34
yeah excited to uh do this live stream um I always like having time to answer
4:43
your questions and tonight is that night so if you have questions uh you should definitely tune
4:49
in so I'm just checking my audio we'll fix that just a
4:54
second all right perfect so we got that going on um
5:00
yeah but before we get started I'm excited to uh tell you guys about the DIY camper van conversion course that
5:07
I'm launching it's called the camper van conversion blueprint
5:13
and we are are going to be launching that October 1st but right now you guys can click on this link you can go ahead
5:20
and pre-order it save some money before the launch and I'm really excited about it and there is some stuff down here
5:28
that's going to tell you about the course I think the easiest way is for me just to explain it to you really quick
5:34
so this DIY camper van conversion course it's going to take you from buying the vehicle so whether you choose to uh do
5:41
new or used you want to do two wheel drive all-wheel drive um we'll talk about the whole entire process of
5:47
getting the van um I have a video that I've never released before that's going to be in this course and it is a vehicle
5:55
inspection so uh John and Susan's build they were thinking about doing a van uh
6:03
they were thinking about buying a van that had already been converted and just doing a couple of tweaks and changes to
6:08
it with me um and I told them hey just wait a second let me actually inspect it for you make sure it's safe there's not
6:15
some weird stuff going on with the van um so it's an actual video inspection of
6:21
me going up checking the van out um going through the electrical system and doing a pre-inspection and giving them
6:27
kind of a report on you know if I would be comfortable uh for them to buy this
6:33
or not as a conversion so uh I won't tell you how that goes and all the details it's in the course but if you're
6:40
considering buying a vehicle um a pre-inspection something like that is really good to do uh before you get too
6:47
deep into the build so not only the make and model um engine size and stuff like that but also
6:54
the weight carrying capacity there's a whole bunch of details on that we'll put that in the course so you really
6:59
understand understand what you're getting into when you actually go to buy your adventure van um the next thing
7:04
we're going to do is we'll hop into talking about uh design and layout so
7:10
after you've gotten your van you know H how do you want the van designed what what you know do you want passenger
7:16
seating do you want a kitchen Galley St place for fridge how much water or where
7:22
the placement of everything is in the van um is important because once you kind of get started uh sometimes things
7:29
things are hard to go back and change um and if you have a plan a good design a
7:36
layout um everything goes a lot smoother as far as install goes uh but
7:43
we'll talk about design and layout and I'll help guide you through uh with one part of the course on you know what I
7:49
think are some good designs layouts and what to uh take into consideration when you're getting ready to to take that uh
7:56
big dive and actually do your own DIY van conversion um tonight's video is going to be
8:03
something that's close to what's in the course um it's pretty much going through
8:09
uh a power system an off-grid power system learning what that even means uh
8:16
the quick answer is off- grid power system means we are not connected to the vehicle technically we're not connected
8:22
to the grid outside with a Shore power connection we have enough battery capacity and power generation or
8:28
conversion to run appliances in the van run the air conditioner um for a certain
8:33
period of time without needing any type of external uh power source coming in uh
8:39
now whether if that's supplemented with solar um uh it just depends on what you
8:44
want to do but we'll have a whole part of the course where it walks you through
8:50
uh maybe what power system you want to go with so this is an individ individualized component
8:57
setup um you can do this if you're more comfortable with um connecting stuff
9:03
independently uh if you're not that techsavvy which is completely cool you can go with something like ecoflow which
9:09
is an all-in-one unit um and uh it's much quicker faster to install and uh
9:17
might be something that you're you're into then we'll move into the fresh and
9:22
graywater tanks so recently we did a lot of undermount tanks which are the gray tanks underneath this van so those tanks
9:30
uh are part of the plumbing system underneath here we have a giant 40-gallon water tank and
9:36
uh Plumbing with sink you know Reva sink uh nice kind of uh really deep sink Chef
9:43
style faucet um but within the fresh gry water storage we'll talk about Plumbing
9:49
talk about fittings we'll talk about PEX a um stuff that I recommend that you do um so that you're doing a pro style
9:56
build you're not kind of just uh you know randomly Con in stuff um you don't
10:01
want to spend all that money in investment and then have something leak in your van and mess up all the work you
10:07
put into it um the next part we'll talk about insulation sound dampening um we'll talk
10:14
about interior panels so with this van we have an adventure wagon system
10:19
however you you any type of system you can put in a van uh you don't have to do
10:26
Adventure wagon um there's a lot of DIY van uh kits which are just blank wood
10:33
panels that have been CNC cut so they've been cut out by a computer and so they're exact fit for the wall all you
10:39
have to do is actually spray some uh upholstery adhesive and then find
10:44
whatever fabric you have go ahead and wrap that so John and Susan's van for example that one was not was a kit of
10:52
just raw wood and then what I did was I upholstered everything for them so
10:57
that's a better uh budget friendly option um and to be honest you get the same effect the adventure wagon kit is a
11:04
little bit different because they're not wood panels so they're a lot of thermoform plastic and um uh it's just a
11:12
different way of doing kind of the same thing but their their kits um it's a
11:18
proprietary kit but the ease is if you need uh something that is if you're
11:25
somebody that likes to follow directions and do things step by step um Adventure
11:30
wagon is a good way to go if you're more creative freehand and you want to uh
11:36
guess for lack for better word if you want to chop up some stuff so you're going to be cutting a lot of uh holes
11:42
out that um would take away from the panels for example you can get a whole
11:47
entire floor system I opt to not do the whole entire floor system I do my own in the shop because I'm cutting out holes
11:54
for the shower I'm cutting out holes for an inverter Hol for slide out trays uh
12:02
secondary seats and that takes away a lot of the um you're couldn't have a bunch of wood
12:09
that you paid for so it's better to just for my case I I just do uh templates U
12:15
there's company can do templates for so you see we we're going to get really into the Weeds about the Vans and in
12:20
this course and uh I think it's going to really help you with any questions you have um there's three more things we
12:27
have exterior upgrades so we're going to be talking about roof rack placement uh
12:33
where you're going to cut out the holes in your roof how to cut out the holes in your roof um because I know that can be
12:38
stressful we'll talk about awnings um the max fans uh rooftop AC unit such as
12:45
the dematic RTX 2000 the nomatic cooling uh X2 system that's a 48 volt unit and
12:52
um other things too we'll talk about uh rear tire carriers so whenever you get an
12:58
adventure and if you oversize your tire to get a little bit more clearance or you just want some more robust tires
13:05
this is typically not going to fit anymore your new set under your spare tire area such as this van and an
13:11
external tire carrier is what you're going to have to to go with and we'll
13:18
talk about there's all kinds of products on the market um but not only will we
13:23
talk about the tire carrier but we'll talk about side ladders and some other
13:29
stuff like storage boxes um finally we're going to talk about getting your van ready for hitting
13:35
the road and you know all the stuff that you want to put into it if whether doing like bikes bed systems uh camper van
13:42
mattresses all that fun stuff and then we're going to end with uh inviting you
13:48
to the Online private Community where we're going to have uh it's essentially a forum so we'll have all the questions
13:56
from YouTube channel the comments that you guys have had had uh conversations I've had with my past clients and the
14:03
really good questions that they've asked will be in that Forum um we're also going to be talking
14:09
about uh uh questions from the blog we'll kind of put in there and I'll be in the Forum
14:18
answering questions for you guys so not only will you guys have connections with um individuals who bought the course
14:25
will be in that Community but I'll be in there ask answering question questions for you that come up and uh it's just a
14:31
good place to go so when you get into this you have some way of getting some uh feedback on you know what you're
14:39
going through because cutting a hole in the roof of your brand new van you know it's stressful there's a lot of people
14:44
that are going to be doing the same thing just like you so uh yeah we'll end with that private online community and
14:51
um pretty excited about it but this is the uh if you go to Van Builder hq.com
14:58
camper and conversion blueprint the link is in the description below you guys can pre-order this course today click on the
15:05
link go ahead and buy the course you're going to save money before the launch on before the
15:13
price goes up on October 1st so uh yeah go ahead and get in there save some
15:18
money get ready to uh have a course that's going to help you uh every step of the way through the whole entire van
15:24
build process and um yeah I can't wait to uh
15:29
launch it in October really excited can't wait to hear the feedback and by the way during this whole live stream if
15:35
you have a question something that you'd like to see in the course or something that you'd like to have talked about
15:40
during the course put this in the comments ask me live and um yeah excited
15:46
to uh excited to launch the course all right we have a question here um it says
15:54
why not so ABY says why not use a power station instead of the way it's built
15:59
now I'm assuming you're talking about like an ecoflow or um some type of like
16:05
Standalone solar generator or something like that um this is uh I don't want to say it's
16:14
for if you're doing hardcore adventuring or off-road but really the short answer
16:20
is it is this is a system designed to where um if you're going to go out for a
16:25
long time you need redundant systems so we've got two dual mpbt solar charge
16:33
controllers and dcdc charge controllers so there's just some redundancy um instead of it
16:39
being a power station that's kind of a black box if something goes wrong here
16:45
um you should be able to diagnose it or just disconnect it um if that
16:51
happens uh so one is redundancy two is modularity we want to be able
16:57
to uh have this very small profile over here so that we don't mess up our
17:03
storage area in the van so this is really compact it's really tight so much
17:09
so that I have a uh thermostatically controlled exhaust fand over here that
17:15
monitors the temperature inside this chamber and will vent it uh depending on
17:20
how hot it gets um there's some other features in this system three of the batteries have
17:28
their own Heating system so if the van is in frigid temperatures below
17:33
32° uh lithium batteries cannot charge at that temperature so there's actually heaters in three of the batteries so
17:41
what will happen is three of these batteries will turn off uh when it's freezing three will
17:48
self-heat uh and they will maintain power in the van until the van is warmed up and then the other three batteries
17:54
will actually turn on um so there's just a bunch of uh systems going
18:00
on um you're ex basically creating you know this is like a power plant for the
18:07
H for the van it's the household power for the van uh as well as 12vt too today
18:13
is kind of like the icing on the cake we're taking every we're we're installing a second alternator um which
18:19
is basically a second way to charge the system um but it's like on steroids so
18:28
what whereas the two DC to DC Chargers could potentially have a 100 amp
18:33
throughput so charging current um and then we've got 420 watts
18:38
of solar so that's just a ballpark full sun maybe you're getting 20 to 30 amps per
18:45
hour so we got we go from 100 amps of charging to 280 amps of charging so we
18:52
with 600 amp hours of power um we can charge almost
18:59
probably full sun and having the engine idle for one hour we can get 50% charge
19:06
back in the batteries that's important if you're in a hot area and you're going to be using the air conditioner all night the air conditioner is probably
19:12
going to go through three of the batteries and the reason you want to be able to recoup three out of the six
19:19
batteries is because you want to have the air conditioner on for the next night
19:24
so the system is all designed on purpose to make sure that you get to use the van
19:32
how the van was designed so that's kind of my long answer to uh to answer that
19:38
question um yeah but we're going to get into it let me uh fix this camera here the
19:46
screen's going to go black for a second so just bear with me I just
19:53
gotta get this camera
19:59
see why this camera is not
20:05
working hold on there we go okay okay this is called the van cam so
20:14
this will be showing you what I do and what's nice is you know later you guys can scrub through the video and go back
20:21
and forth um figure out what I'm doing if I'm
20:26
going too fast but yeah we're taking this thing apart um I don't
20:33
want to but I I like doing things the right way so the right way to do this is
20:39
to properly get everything rewired um last night I actually had to pull out
20:47
the wiring that I did to the alternator because there was a wire that I went
20:52
under instead of over and the right thing to do would have been to bring that wire over so I had had to pull out
20:59
the whole two 4 o cable and go over this wire um because I really wanted to make
21:05
sure that there is no issue for their van um going
21:11
forward and for me you know I stand by everything that I do in the Vans and um
21:17
if there's something I anticipate might have something an issue in the future I'm going to just address it and just
21:23
handle it um so that's what I'm doing tonight and uh since I'm taking so much stuff part Let's uh let's have fun just
21:32
watching watching me do it um so before I go to the camera and get working
21:38
remember ask questions I want feedback during the live stream um and also if
21:44
you're interested in purchasing the course you guys can hop on here fan hq.com links in description camper van
21:52
blueprint and uh yeah let's go ahead and uh hop in the van and get working
22:00
so what we're going to be doing today is taking these batteries out and
22:09
um let's see here so what I've done over here
22:16
is um I'm just going to start kind of cleaning
22:22
up little bit of my mess here so I can just have a nice place to work but we're
22:31
removing the batteries um this panel right here I'm not going to be removing this panel uh
22:38
this panel that I'm putting my knee on this is the panel that covers the the heater over here
22:46
um you may be asking why the heater's here and not underneath the passenger
22:51
seat uh this van does not have a uh divider
23:00
wall and this is kind of my personal experience in Vans I like to have the
23:05
heater underneath the bed so when it's really cold you know the Heat's back here um not that a Webasto could not
23:13
heat the whole entire van this thing is powerful as heck um that's that's not the issue it's more uh it's very easy to
23:21
install it in a back the back right here you have a lot of room underneath the van to work and do your piping um
23:27
another benefit is you are not crossing over the exhaust system with a active
23:33
fuel line whereas when you do it in the passenger seat you have to Shield the
23:38
fuel line with a like an aluminized uh heat shield um which is completely safe it's
23:47
just when I was doing this I didn't want to do that and um this is where I did it
23:52
on my personal van so I just kind of stuck with it but I'm open to either way of doing it now
23:59
um but we've made sure that we have enough air space and air gap on the top bottom and sides and you'll see a little
24:07
uh pro hack that I did under here to just ensure that the batteries are nice and uh cool during the
24:15
operation um but yeah we're going to start just taking apart a bunch of stuff in
24:22
here uh the main reason I want to do this is I am getting this
24:30
uh the Renegy Network battery Network system uh just getting a little bit more
24:38
optimized because we have we have just a bunch of wires in here these batteries I'm using they are
24:45
the Renegy smart lithium and each one can be Daisy Chained and networked
24:51
together they work with a system called the M1 and the M1 core and uh it's pretty much much like a
24:58
victron system where you have that screen where you can see your charging profiles over here on my right hand side
25:05
you see there's two Bluetooth controllers with some lights on these two Bluetooth controllers they operate
25:13
the uh Renegy uh these combo charging units and
25:20
the Bluetooth communicates with the main screen which is up in the by the passenger side area on the
25:27
wall and and that allows us to see how much engine charging we have um solar
25:35
coming in all those numbers if you want to nerd out on that stuff and um yeah
25:41
allows us to uh to do [Music]
25:48
that this is the extra cable from the Bluetooth and we're just going to we'll
25:53
just have it underneath here when we're done so just cuz we're really tight on space but like I said we're going to
25:59
take these batteries out and top them off because we are replacing one of the
26:16
batteries another reason I need to take them out is the uh victron shunt that I'm
26:22
using I need to uh trying to find my knee pad there it
26:29
is the victron shun that I'm using there's two small screws on it and it's
26:37
required uh wake speed controller needs to have those two
26:43
inputs and I need I when I install I wasn't anticipating putting a second
26:48
alternator in this van um so I didn't really design it for a
26:54
second alternator so that's why a lot of this stuff is being taken apart part and put uh put back
27:01
together and what I'm doing right now is I'm just removing
27:06
some couple of components here that I
27:13
added that I no longer need
27:45
so for example this thing I'm taken out this was a hub uh that I was using for
27:52
this system um so I'm just removing that because it's not necessary anymore
27:59
and then we've got put this back in
28:09
here now one thing I have with this system is uh this fan has a bunch of I say a
28:17
bunch it has two subpanels so we've got a mini a mini four fuse subpanel here and
28:26
this mini subpanel does does uh easy things one it's the power
28:32
for the victron shunt controller which looks like
28:38
this um this is a Bluetooth controller so um you connect it on this is a very
28:45
popular Bluetooth controller this one however you know it's not necessary to mount this
28:52
anywhere because uh it's better to use the app on your phone you get more functionality on your pH phone so this
28:58
just sits uh you know zip tide behind here um but today we've got to get to
29:04
this so that we can uh connect the second alternator to it and I'll explain
29:11
more about that as we get to it so that needs power the uh control
29:20
the ventilation program little board here it needs power um there's a synth power for the
29:29
dtic dtic RTX 2000 AC unit um and then there
29:38
is uh another 12vt that we're using
29:45
for uh the battery uh for the Dual DC todc mppt
29:52
solar charge controllers so
29:59
yeah I'm just going to be be talking about all this stuff in case you guys have uh questions
30:37
okay a pro tip that I would give to you guys is take tons of before and after
30:46
photos now I've designed this system I've taken it apart I don't know 10 12
30:53
times I still take photos of everything just in case I get ahead of myself and I
31:01
take one thing out that I forgot did a certain
31:09
thing I write down everything with a permanent marker everything's labeled like over here we've got the the AC
31:16
breaker and everything so we've got everything is written every single one of these cables is numbered so I know
31:23
exactly what cable is specifically designed for each battery I've got the number um I know where it starts it ends
31:32
um so I would suggest you do that it's just going to help you
31:40
out um now when you get to a point of doing what I'm doing right here uh just make sure that you know
31:49
that um batteries are always on okay and we
31:56
don't want to short anything because that'd be really
32:03
bad uh I'm going to grab some
32:21
tape and I don't know if you guys can see this over here but this is kind of like a pro tip I uh
32:29
I have this felt tape I love using this felt tape because it's good for
32:34
vibrations it's good for um like stuff chafing against each other for example
32:41
the right side of this is completely covered in felt so that the Flatline vanco refrigerator cabinet doesn't uh
32:49
grind itself over time it's just a nice padded
32:55
side um but what it also does is it will help you it won't prevent but it'll help
33:00
you from arcing in some tight spots uh like we're going to about uh to do we're
33:06
not going to Arc but we're going to make sure we don't do that
33:30
all right let's keep going here okay we got another another
33:35
question we've got what amp fuses do you have in the victron links distributor
33:41
for each connection perfect question that's a great
33:46
question I will open that up here in just a second and I'll tell you taping these wires together because
33:53
I don't want them to
33:59
go away yeah let's go ahead and pop this off um I have the breaker turned off I
34:08
don't have the uh the batteries aren't fully disconnected so that's
34:22
okay okay so so what they were talking talking
34:28
about is this we got our vicron linkx distributor this is our main bus bar for
34:34
the system so all your me your very heavy amp loads need to be ran through
34:40
something like this the linkx distributor hands down this is not sponsored or anything like that it's
34:46
just the cleanest simplest I like it you can daisy chain as many as you
34:52
want um but what we have running through here is for our
34:58
3000 watt inverter we've got a 300 amp
35:04
fuse uh for our 4 a cable for our nomatic I mean for our
35:10
doedic RTX 2000 we are running an 80 amp fuse with a six gauge
35:17
wire our two DC todc mppt charge controller combo units they are 50 amp
35:24
Chargers each but we have a 60 amp fuse on each of them running a six gauge
35:31
wire so hopefully that will uh give you a little bit of a idea of what that's
35:37
going on um so what are my thoughts on building your own
35:43
battery uh like the eve cells yeah I've I've I've heard a lot of
35:49
people um I think will PR's uh Channel you know probably year
35:55
two I'd actually probably say like three years ago they were really he's got a lot of good videos on people that were
36:02
building that and I think he built it there's another YouTuber that build cells um if you like to do stuff like
36:09
that that's fun uh um would be yeah it would be
36:15
something fun to do um I don't think there's anything wrong with it the one thing I would just make sure is you know
36:22
you really understand how to integrate a BMS into those units when you put the cells together together you
36:30
understand uh what the cell voltages are and you have a way of
36:37
properly connecting them to the BMS with whatever one you use and that you have something that can
36:44
charge that like you something you can set uh whether it's victron Renegy to
36:51
charge it at the correct lithium profile um if that was Greek to you
36:59
then buy the DIY van build course from me and I I'll explain all that to you in
37:04
detail but long story short um if you
37:09
want to Tinker and kind of build your own batteries I think that's I think that's cool just uh yeah just know you're building your
37:16
your own batteries for your system make sure you're doing it safe um but yeah they make uh they make
37:24
a lot of uh like little plastic cartridges that'll hold those batteries for you or those individual cells so you
37:31
can actually wrap them and make make your own batteries um okay we're going to keep
37:36
going
37:47
here now over here on the left hand side we've got a 300 amp terminal fuse and so
37:54
this is where all the main power is coming in to charge the
38:01
batteries uh and the first thing I'm I'm undoing right now these are the two so
38:09
Renegy DC todc charge controllers so these things are mad at me right now
38:14
because I just unplugged this but these right here are
38:20
um what let what let the lets the unit know uh the status of the battery
38:29
so we're just going to tape this up out of the
38:45
way okay so here's our terminal fuse we're just going to set this over
38:54
here um because I need to take this battery out and slide it out because I
39:00
need to uh uh again the reason this is so hard
39:06
is the shunt that I need to get to I put in a place where I never thought I'd have to get to it before um
39:13
but the second alternator is causing me to need to get to that
39:37
all right so the next question is do you think the 24 or 48 volt is the future uh
39:43
I personally think 48 volt is um for John and Susan's van the 48 volt system
39:49
that I put in there was uh the first thing that shocked me is
39:58
it's I don't have a way to explain this other than I'm so used to understanding
40:04
how long it takes 12vt systems to charge and discharge but the uh the 48 volt system when John and
40:12
I were just kind of testing the van out had the AC on charging everything it just seems to charge so much faster like
40:20
very very fast uh the air conditioning unit it seems that it ramps up you know
40:26
twice as fast as far as like the compressor and everything turning on and the only way I can explain it uh not
40:33
technically is that I just think the higher voltage is just it's just able to to do
40:41
that um let's see what was I doing
40:47
here yeah 4 out cables are massive but the reason that I do it is because I go
40:53
by the book when I do any type of electrical and
40:59
um you know if I have
41:05
uh if I have a battery bank that is going to be charging at
41:13
um you know 300 amps of potential you know I need to make sure that the cables
41:21
now theoretically you're not ever going to get to 100% efficiency on charging so
41:27
but I wire my systems as if you could get that and that's just that's just
41:32
like a safety that's just a safety thing for me and it's good CU guess what we weren't
41:39
planning on putting a second alternator in this van but since
41:44
we uh sized the battery to what we did we have no
41:51
issue cranking in you know 280 amps to these batteries the way way that we have
41:57
everything set up we don't have to remake our wires we don't have to do any of that we are we are ready to
42:10
go um if you don't want to buy those fancy like clim tools you see all I did was just take my
42:17
chunky uh screwdriver here and just put a coat of electrical tape on it I have
42:23
some of those in the shop I just uh I don't know I don't want I don't want
42:28
to look for them um I may need to get my ratchet out for some maybe
42:42
not yeah and just be very careful when you're doing this you
42:48
know it's a lot of current
43:13
uh if you're wondering while these batteries look weird um and what I mean by that is I'm sorry
43:20
these battery cables why they're kind of bent and not just a straight jog over since we have
43:27
this battery at a different orientation to fit the victron uh links distributor
43:33
our length of battery cable is this long
43:38
now rule of thumb it or the what you want to achieve is every connection to
43:45
every battery you want this cable to be the exact same length so that everything
43:51
uh is charged evenly our charges and discharges evenly so
43:58
um yeah if you can do that it is that's the best way to do
44:12
it and I've got these all numbered I'm putting them on the floor these are all going to be in order
44:33
all right we are getting close um we will need to start getting in here
44:40
and unfortunately cutting off all the zip ties that I neatly put it together
44:46
but that is just comes with a territory of
44:55
upgrades by the way if you guys don't have flush cut uh Cutters it is the best thing to
45:04
have so this right here see these things right
45:14
here so there not five batteries there's six batteries in there you can't see the six one I'll show it to you here in just
45:21
a minute me grab something to drink really
45:26
quick
45:47
Qui yeah so see right here we got five and then this is the six one behind
45:53
behind here
46:04
all right
46:22
so so now this cable right
46:28
here this is from all the Bluetooth controllers
47:22
so I found out that it's pronounced
47:28
kipic they said that the K is hard so I don't know if you guys were asking about
47:35
I used to always call it naex but yeah I like that I like that
47:41
stuff it's a question on wiring do you shop local or order from
47:48
somewhere yeah so I order from Wendy nation and believe it or not they have a
47:54
store on Amazon so windy nation is where I get all my
48:00
chunky cable
48:08
um yes so windy Nation Oh appreciate it
48:18
so uh this panel over here on my right that you maybe you can't see I did that
48:24
one um all these other panels uh in the van so
48:30
by the way this is an adventure wagon interior system um now I still build the
48:37
same way this one just happens to be a kit but if you check out John and Susan's van Tour on the channel that one
48:44
I the whole van I did by hand um only certain panels in this van I did by hand
48:58
all right another Pro tip positive comes in here you get Daisy chained
49:03
technically right here you could go back to your bus bar with a negative but remember we want our power coming in to
49:11
be even to the power going out so what I did is you see this this looks crazy but
49:17
this is tying in the end battery back to the
49:22
system so by doing this the theory is it
49:29
evenly uh it evenly will discharge and charge the batteries more
49:36
evenly um so everything's been working great so
49:42
I'm not sure I I have I've never done it a different way so if you're wondering why this big long
49:48
cable is so it's because the length of this cable from the positive coming into
49:55
the batteries is the is the same length it's this long because the cable going
50:01
to the disconnect switch is the same length so we want the ground cable and
50:09
the disconnect switch cable to be the same length we don't want our negatives in our system to be shorter
50:16
than our positives now if you don't do that everything will still work
50:23
um it's just possible that the charging and discharging might not be as
50:30
even um really it's kind of OCD if you have if you already have your van put
50:36
together and you didn't do that I don't worry about
50:42
it okay so this right here this is the Ground Terminal for this little mini
50:49
four fuse uh little sub panel I call it it's like a mini sub panel this is just the
50:56
rounding block for that so if you have any like little tiny things that are not like a big deal you don't need a big
51:02
fuse panel for this four fuse blue SE systems is a I think it's a really good
51:09
thing to have uh speaking of
51:18
that I need to I forgot to shut off my solar panels solar panels are always
51:24
on and you really need to make sure you have a a way to disconnect them even in the shop with a big shop lights they're
51:31
still generating uh
51:39
voltage um do you want to discharge further away or is that just how yours
51:46
came out so yeah the distance at which you discharge doesn't matter
51:55
um uh the reason that I that this is so long
52:00
is I wanted my disconnect switch because it's it's the cable to get to my disconnect switch had to be that long so
52:08
my ground I wanted to match it and that's so that that's what I
52:20
did so your cable Link's going anywhere your solar down to your charge controller your inverter to to your
52:26
batteries the positive and negative you want that to be the same
52:32
length um
53:09
and guys don't forget while I'm doing the live stream I've just launched my DIY camper van conversion
53:16
course um it's called the camper van con conversion blueprint so I'm excited
53:22
to launch that it will be officially launch launched October 1st but you guys
53:28
can actually uh pre-order the course today for a discount so if anybody that's watching
53:35
is interested in it I'd be I would love for you guys to
53:41
uh sign up for it all right so now we're going to be taking out our first battery
53:47
over here on the right and this thing is just uh there's
53:56
noon reason to strap the batteries down or anything like that they are like cartridges the way I designed this
54:03
so um this is going to be so I'm going to label these batteries
54:09
because uh so I did some testing and this guy for some reason with its tape
54:17
on here um the communication Port everything works uh for some reason
54:24
the if you want to read the cell voltages it wasn't spitting that information out and I just went ahead
54:31
and I'm I'm replacing the battery so while I'm replacing it I said you
54:36
know what I'm going to replace it I'm going to take all the batteries out so I can wire the second alternator in here
54:44
and that way you know if you're going through all this effort might as well
54:49
just really knock it out okay so I'm just labeling the
54:55
batteries as how they came
55:00
out nice thing about lithium batteries is they're not like lead acid they're
55:05
not heavy at all
55:48
all right here's my little Pro tip so what I did is I cut this piece of diamond
55:55
plate and what this does is this is my again this is overkill it's pretty
56:01
much not necessary it's just my uh what I like to do in my builds but this is
56:08
you know it just keeps it dissipates that heat from when you do have this thing cranking um these batteries are
56:14
fine for a pretty high temperature but this is just a uh look it's simple it
56:19
doesn't hurt to just cut it and put it in here but if you're wondering why that is why
56:26
I have it
57:01
okay I'll be back in the van in just a second I'm just uh setting these up on the charge station I got in the
57:10
shop and then I'll pull out the last two batteries
57:56
for
58:50
now these remember the batteries are still live so don't don't Arc it on
58:58
this all right so here's that fancy one over here in the corner so this is the
59:03
six battery that's kind of hidden back behind here so we're just going to slide it
59:11
out then we'll just twist [Music] it and it comes right out
1:00:08
all right now we got some space to work
1:00:16
here and let's see heck yeah awesome okay very good I was hoping that
1:00:25
I'm going to be able to have to get a different screwdriver but I can access I can access that now
1:00:33
that's great um
1:01:19
so what I'm doing now is I'm just doing Cable Management I need to get the
1:01:27
need to get access to this corner over
1:01:39
here we're going to ground this
1:01:48
system uh we're going to ground this system on the backside bottom of our
1:01:57
victron and uh it's possible I have a a screw long enough to do that I'm not
1:02:04
sure um but now we're going to
1:02:10
Route the Big 4 o cable all the way through and we're going to route for the wake speed
1:02:17
controller so if you guys have been waiting for all that to happen
1:02:23
that's what I'm doing right now so we're going to do a negative
1:02:30
cable
1:02:36
first and since you guys since I like to show you everything the negative cable going to
1:02:45
here will be a foot shorter than the positive so
1:02:51
you know it's I could make it longer but I I'm
1:02:57
not sure if I will cuz I really need to keep this uh this Cable Management really tight
1:03:04
behind here because there's just there is there's really no room to
1:03:12
uh to change it up
1:03:39
now I will be going over uh I'm not sure if I get to it today but in a later
1:03:45
video about we will do a video showing you exactly how to connect the wake speed controller to this system so this
1:03:53
is the kind of down and dirty video of getting all the cables to where they need to be but I will do a dedicated
1:04:01
video showing you exactly how I'm hooking the wak speed controller up if
1:04:06
you do want to uh if you do want to have a um a video on that
1:05:03
I was thinking about going on top of the batteries but this is uh I think think going going on top of the batteries is
1:05:09
just going to be too much of a uh there's already not enough room
1:05:15
so I think we're going to pass on that one all right so let's see how we're
1:05:22
going to get through here
1:05:48
okay so we're going to come under the shunt
1:05:55
and we're going to go straight out that way first and then we'll come back around
1:06:45
and when you do this connection it needs to be a continuous run you it's
1:06:52
uh I wouldn't even think about trying to to cut this and then reattach it to
1:07:03
itself cuz if you do it wrong it's going to be a uh hot spot in the
1:07:09
cable create a lot of resistance and if you got 280 amps
1:07:14
coming through this you don't want any resistance I mean any more than
1:07:20
what the cable can take
1:10:04
I appreciate you guys watching but this is definitely the uh this is the boring part it's pulling
1:10:18
wire so we'll take this positive and this is what's going to come
1:10:24
over and and it'll actually connect to the second battery not because it's special or anything like that it's just
1:10:31
we've already populated the first battery terminal with the 300 amp fuse bringing
1:10:37
the power into the battery bank system itself so this one we're just
1:10:45
Distributing it to another terminal so that one terminal is not you know taking
1:10:53
in all that ju use
1:11:43
if you're wondering about the cable length I ordered 25 ft so whatever excess you see here I think we'll
1:11:49
measure it um but yeah I think ft was going to make
1:11:56
sure I was safe uh with what I had
1:12:01
actually brought into
1:12:11
this
1:12:20
okay yeah if you got any questions just uh go ahead and ask me I'm going to hop underneath the V really
1:12:26
quick um I'm checking where the cables are coming
1:12:32
from to see where my slack
1:12:42
is and yep I got a ton of it
1:13:22
okay I think that yeah underneath the van man it's a
1:13:27
different story underneath the van it is pretty wild down here Cu
1:13:34
uh if you saw in the the earlier live stream today there just a bunch of stuff going
1:13:41
on down here and so trying to get the wires exactly the way you want
1:13:48
them [Applause] uh I know I'm a big visual person too so
1:13:56
or somebody might do something and it looks weird but it's actually wired correct I try to wire it correctly and
1:14:03
make it look presentable so it doesn't you know so somebody that didn't know
1:14:09
what was going on if they looked at it they would say well you know what that looks that looks right all right so right there I think
1:14:20
that okay I think that's good
1:14:43
so I'm going see if I can zip tie this on the inside and get get my starting point
1:15:00
okay so uh yeah what am I wiring up so I'm wiring up a second
1:15:06
alternator and I've had to take apart my batteries and everything because of a couple reasons I need to replace One
1:15:13
battery two I have to take all the batteries out to get this wire
1:15:19
ran to or my bus bar three there's a
1:15:24
cable on the Wakee speed regulator so this is what we're going to be installing this is the uh wake speed
1:15:31
regulator for the nation's second alternator for Ford Transit this is a 2020 Ford Transit all whe Drive which
1:15:38
doesn't matter the EcoBoost is what does matter because it's the engine
1:15:44
um but yeah so we're hooking this up and there's some communication cables that have to be ran so
1:15:51
besides these cables that are coming directly from the alternator we have to prep the system for the
1:15:59
communication cables that come out of this harness right here so this
1:16:05
harness plugs into the wake speed regulator box that's his
1:16:11
communication and then from this harness we have a bunch of
1:16:16
pigtails and we've got
1:16:27
this all untangled
1:16:32
here so this bunch of wires right here
1:16:40
this we got a bunch of things happening we've got positive negative power for the Box the controller box we've got
1:16:48
some other cables for the shunt to monitor power coming in and out we've got an ignition sense wire and then some
1:16:55
of these wires aren't used but this will be done will be done in a dedicated
1:17:02
video um this is if you have a can buus system which we are not on can buus but
1:17:08
if you had that that is what you would wire and then last but not least we got
1:17:15
a battery temperature sensor that's going to go in our negative terminal the first battery and then this is going to
1:17:23
all be over here um so that is what is to come but
1:17:31
tonight is just Cable Management um I record all
1:17:36
this so that I personally can go back and know what van I built kind of how to
1:17:42
troubleshoot stuff um so if I'm already going to film it
1:17:48
might as well get you guys along and see if you have any questions which uh yeah happy to ask answer questions this is
1:17:56
not a two o wire believe it or not it's a 4 a wire so very very chunky very heavy
1:19:04
see
1:21:25
so what I'm working on now is there's a special grommet that I have where the wires are coming through the floor and
1:21:31
I've got to reposition that which is uh not easy
1:21:56
that also went over that in another live stream talking about that uh just a grommet and then like a
1:22:02
waterproof housing makes it real nice so that stuff doesn't get in your
1:22:08
uh up in your power system bugs stuff like that what size should I run for my
1:22:15
battery to so a 12 1250 amp
1:22:25
so 50 amp dc run all right let's take a take a little
1:22:32
break we'll do some do some math here
1:22:38
so I'm assuming you're talking about a DC todc charge controller 12vt it's a 50
1:22:45
amp dc todc charger uh so Rod we've got
1:22:55
so if you do let's see here we've
1:23:09
got okay so first up we need to make sure that you look up uh amperage so the wire size that you
1:23:18
should run from your battery to the um okay victron excess what is
1:23:53
that for
1:24:26
see I'm trying I'm trying to find the manual really
1:24:48
quick okay so this is what we're working with
1:24:54
and uh so I'm assuming it's we're going to be using a six gauge so right
1:25:02
here um actually it's already messed up my messed up how I was going to answer
1:25:08
this question all right so the cable that I'm assuming we're going to be using uh just
1:25:14
with the 50 amps you definitely want to have at least a six gauge cable all
1:25:21
right so that's the first step second step is we're just going to comb through here really
1:25:52
quick so they say six gauge there but yeah six
1:25:58
gauge so this is what you need to pay attention to if it's less than 5
1:26:04
m and you can do uh meters to
1:26:12
feet meters to feet so 5 m is 16 ft so as long as from
1:26:23
your where you're connecting it to your alternator or your battery and your van to the unit itself this victron unit as
1:26:30
long as you're less than 16 ft you can use six gauge that's what this
1:26:37
means if you're 5 to 10 m so if you're over 16 ft then you need to bump it up
1:26:46
to four gauge um typically in a van you're
1:26:52
probably not going to be running more than than 16 ft so if it's less than 16 ft away from
1:27:00
the alternator or the uh basically the battery right here that you're connecting it to you'll be fine with six
1:27:06
gauge and then six gauge for a 50 amp
1:27:13
um you know I use a 60 amp fuse um let's see here
1:27:21
uh you can do 68 WG
1:27:27
fuse uh size and so they say 80
1:27:35
amp um as long as you don't have anything that's going to usually probably do a
1:27:40
current Spike like uh something turning on
1:27:49
um uh you can use 80 amp um but if you use like a
1:27:54
a 60 or 75 amp it' be okay I would I would not do anything bigger than an 80
1:28:00
amp fuse because you don't want to overdo this
1:28:07
wire um yeah so the max six gauge is 100 amps
1:28:16
80 amp will make sure it protects the wire before it spikes to 100 and so yeah
1:28:23
if you did six gauge wire ran from your battery to this so this is the six
1:28:30
gauge and then you do another six gauge going to your uh so your starter battery
1:28:36
is what this is connected to first on the input side and then your auxiliary
1:28:41
battery or the batteries in your van like a lithium battery for example that
1:28:46
goes um over here and so you'll need to make sure you have uh ADM fuse here as
1:28:53
well as over here and then the grounds um need to connect
1:28:58
to a chassis ground right
1:29:06
here yeah and so if you have three 200 200 wat solar panels
1:29:13
um uh you'll you would still be okay because your DC to DC charger basically
1:29:19
you have 50 amps of of room if you also have a solar charge controller so 50
1:29:26
amps um well actually cuz you have the 80 amp fuse you have 30 amps of head room in
1:29:33
here so 50 amps and then 30 amps uh 200
1:29:39
watts of solar panels uh there's no way that you would go over 30 amps with 200 watts of solar
1:29:46
panels um on a perfect day you might get
1:29:51
10 to 15 15 amps out of 200 watts of solar panels that's just
1:29:58
my uh my very very close uh estimate on
1:30:09
that so yeah hope that helped um if you have any
1:30:15
more questions yeah feel feel free to uh to ask
1:30:22
um so I'm going to stream for about 15 more minutes if you guys have any questions uh I'm I'm going to have to do
1:30:31
some things that I didn't have planned in the video off camera I'm going to have to go in and cut that little seal that I had
1:30:38
on the floor I'm going to have to rezip tie and put some more RTV and let that
1:30:43
set up um so what I'm going to do in the meantime so off camera I'm going to
1:30:51
uh I'm going be working on that so I'm going to be on here for uh till 8:00
1:30:56
p.m. Eastern Standard Time so if you have any questions let me know uh I'm going to go over here charge
1:31:04
the batteries I got to fix that let's see what else here yes next live stream we'll probably
1:31:12
I'll uh hop on here before I put the batteries back in so we're going to charge them up tonight and then um kind
1:31:19
of go from there yeah so I'll just let this run
1:31:25
questions you guys have any questions where's my where did this
1:31:31
phone go
1:32:01
okay that's it for the work tonight now the next couple minutes we're just going to be taking questions from you guys um
1:32:07
we' had a lot of good questions tonight Rod hope that answered your question um on this uh victron setup
1:32:22

1:32:29

1:32:36
I talked about this at the beginning of the stream but basically it is a camper Vision DIY camper van conversion course
1:32:42
it's going to take you through the whole step of getting started choosing the van design layout offgrid power system
1:32:48
design fresh and gr water installation sound dampening exterior upgrades finalization build and something that'll
1:32:54
really help you guys is this private Community where you can ask questions I'll be in there in the Forum answering
1:33:00
your questions as well so yeah definitely check it out we're doing a pre pre-order until October 1st when it
1:33:06

1:33:11

1:33:18
that we have tonight I'm going to go through the chat and see if I missed any questions
1:33:29
um yeah so let's see if I can pull that up you were asking about wiring it's
1:33:35
windy nation is what I use um also if you need to know what parts and stuff
1:33:42
that I use go on Van Builder hq.com and download the free DIY van build cheat
1:33:49
sheet over here so this cheat sheet is the last three years of all my shop purchases
1:33:56
from Amazon that came to the shop so if I ordered it on Amazon and it came to the shop it's on this list it's
1:34:02
organized we've got cables fuses uh all kinds of stuff like that on
1:34:08
this list water pumps um Renegy components solar panels um they're on
1:34:14
this list it's completely free it's just there to help you out and um all you got to do is Click download put your name
1:34:21
and the email address it's going to come right to your inbox the link is in the description below so yeah if you guys
1:34:27
are looking for components that I use it's on here um I am now going to hop
1:34:34
over to Amazon to show you that uh windy Nation
1:34:44
cable okay so if we go to Amazon you see where how we got a windy Nation you can
1:34:50
go over here to Brands and make sure you're only choosing Wy Nation uh it's a
1:34:55
brand that I I'm not sponsored or anything like that it's just it's stuff that I trust um because I've used it on
1:35:01
all my van conversions I like it because not only do they have it in stock but if you go down here to your
1:35:08
gauge you can select uh what different gauge cable you want so say we want six gauge so rod for
1:35:17
example six gauge that you wanting and then we can go down here uh and we can figure out how much feet we want so for
1:35:26
example if you only needed 15 ft you just click 15 ft black and red you get a
1:35:32
price and then you get your um what's nice is it gives you terminals now you want to make sure on the terminals you
1:35:38
make sure that you are using the correct size terminals um they're just going to give you 5/16 and 38 which is very it's
1:35:47
a very popular size you kind of can't go wrong with those two sizes typical victron or uh battery terminals are
1:35:54
going to be within a 5/16 or a 388 in range
1:36:00
so yeah it comes with those two I think it even comes with some yeah some heat
1:36:05
shrink and uh yeah this is
1:36:12
uh this is the way I would go um but check this out to show you how
1:36:18
expensive that 25 ft of 4 was was um they actually don't even
1:36:25
have it on here I I ordered it off a different setup but yeah 4 a 304 bucks um so that's
1:36:36
pretty typical what you can expect for a 4 o cable that's actually a pretty good deal for that
1:36:46
um yeah but I think this is this is a good product um this is a chart that you guys
1:36:53
if you're doing DIY Vans you should get familiar with this is the length of
1:37:00
cable versus how many amps or current are going through the cable so you see
1:37:05
over here if we've got 4 to 33 ft we're
1:37:10
in this big chunky 4 a range and um yeah it's a good chart to start to
1:37:18
practice to learn how to interpret it or read it and so depending on how far far
1:37:23
your cable is going and how much current you're putting through it this will let you know if you're uh getting the
1:37:30
correct
1:37:37
size yeah awesome on your uh your first van build
1:37:45
um I keep forgetting to not reply through my cell phone
1:38:12
yeah yeah thanks for the awesome questions rod and everybody else that asked questions tonight
1:38:30

1:38:37
