4:06
here we go welcome everybody to the live stream today you guys are having a great weekend we are moving on to building the
4:15
trolino uh enclosure so working on John and Susan's van and we need to make a
4:21
box for the trolino um to house it but then also have a little bit of storage for some toilet paper on the side and
4:29
then then I've already met with them we've sat down on this we found out the distance uh from the back of the fridge
4:36
stack so that when this back part is open you can sit down it's comfortable um making sure there's
4:43
enough clearance so that when you do open the lid the Box doesn't interfere all that stuff so you'll see that uh
4:49
start to come together today we're building the whole entire thing out of 2x4s we'll have a 1/ in panel on the
4:56
right side/ in panel on the front and then the top and then what we're going to do is we're
5:02
not going to hinge it w in alignment with this hinge we're actually going to use again same stainless steel hinges
5:10
we're using for the rest of this build and if you can imagine this will be in the van so driver and passenger
5:17
over here the fridge stack is right here so to access this and use it um
5:24
this hinge will actually be placed back here so it'll be at a distance to where
5:30
you can still store toilet paper and you know cleaning supplies and stuff like that in
5:35
this little Nook but it's enough so that when you open this lid it's going to
5:41
have enough uh you know weight or angle so that it stays up doesn't fall down on
5:46
you and then it clears so that this can open um so I've already pre-cut all the
5:52
wood except for the front and right panels so we're just going to get into uh drilling a bunch of pocket hole
5:58
screws if you guys have any questions along the way then uh you guys can jump
6:04
right into the chat um I already have this built out inside the van so I'm
6:12
just going to start taking this piece by piece over to the table and we'll start
6:19
assembling it and there is a order to all this so
6:25
we just need to make sure we don't get too
6:30
confused on how we how we mock this thing up on the inside all right so we're going to start
6:38
off with our uh our front pieces so these are the pieces that will actually go up here in the
6:46
front um so we've got one
6:55
there and then we got these two uh now what makes this difficult is
7:01
trolino tapered there um so this morning I was measuring
7:07
everything uh preparing for this live stream and the the whole entire thing's tapered you can't really see it until
7:14
you actually hold like a straight edge up uh but it's about a/ inch uh narrower
7:19
at the bottom and then it hits up here at top so got to take that in
7:24
consideration so when I build this this is not going to be all the way flush here it's going to be offset just a
7:29
little bit but the first piece we're going to put just like this and I'm pretty much going to just build
7:36
this freehand just show you guys what it looks like then we'll disassemble it
7:42
drill our pocket hole screws and that'll be that'll pretty much be
7:55
it so you can see this one we're going to have a appear in the
8:01
face and it justes look Overkill that we're using 2x4s uh the reason behind it is if we want space on the inside we
8:08
need something strong enough on the outside so that this is the support for the whole box and then we can keep the
8:15
inside
8:22
open so the next two pieces that we have coming over here we've
8:28
got this side panel so this will be touching the Box um actually no again another half
8:35
inch off yeah this was the fun part about getting this thing
8:41
together it's a weird tapered shape and um the whole goal is that when you're
8:46
using this you want this um you don't want this you want this to
8:53
be recessed so that when you're sitting on this uh you're not going to touch
8:59
this or feel this when you're using it this one is actually going to come up
9:04
here just like that and now what I'm doing here is
9:11
this
9:19
top so this top is this is level with this top so this will be exposed when
9:26
you open the lid what you're going to have is we're going to have this piece of
9:33
popper and this will actually come here and so this is the part that will
9:38
actually open up right there
9:45
um yeah so that'll open up and then you can see that we have plenty of room
9:52
for the top lid to close it's going to be really close but that's just how we
9:58
want to do things keep it nice and cuz we want this top of the seat to be as low profile as possible because this is
10:04
also going to be a jump seat for anybody that wants to hang out in the van and so
10:10
this is already as low as can be it's touching the floor base so this top part
10:17
um we get a square out here we can see that
10:24
that is just we got about less than an eighth but a little bit more than a 16th
10:30
of an inch um so that's GNA be it's going to be
10:36
really nice uh what I might do it's possible that I might shim the back up and then have some type of uh
10:45
felt that this sits on but it's going to be a really really tight fit in a good way um if we can just take a panel over
10:56
here you guys can kind of start to see this come
11:03
together so imagine this piece of popper and this uh piece of birch uh we're not
11:10
going to use Baltic Birch for this we're going to use uh standard half inch plywood
11:18
um so we have the popler here uh the the standard PW is much lighter than the
11:24
Birch the Birch is really heavy and so if you're going to be opening this up and down um if you have just a cushion
11:30
or something on top of it it's just there's no reason to put heavier wood up here now this Frame is going to be heavy
11:36
it'll be this solid Birch because we want it to be thin but strong coming around this outside um but we need this opening so
11:44
this is going to be the top so you can imagine this will be the seat and we can go ahead and measure that just to give
11:50
you an idea of what that
11:56
is um so that's 14 and 1 12
12:02
inches and if John and Susan if you guys are watching this this is another little surprise but uh this foam cushion I
12:09
found it tends to be um now there's more back here so we're going to continue to
12:15
build this but I just wanted to show you why we're talking about this a little surprised but I found a cushion that's
12:21
almost perfect to what I'm trying to put together for
12:26
you and so this is just an outdoor
12:31
uh Pham pad seat from Lowe's like outdoor furniture seat and believe it or not it should
12:39
bring us to our pretty close to our height that we were going
12:45
for so you can go online and uh let's see you do
12:57
standard standard chair seat height and a standard chair seat height is typically
13:05
18 to 23 in so we're going to be right
13:12
at 18 and A2 um then this is going to compress down right at 18 maybe even 17 and a 12
13:20
so this should be a fairly comfortable seating
13:27
uh arrangement you can go online and all of the ergonomics and stuff like that they've
13:33
already been done so if you want to find out if you're making a dinette or a bench seat or anything like that all those measurements are online so the way
13:40
the Standard Furniture is built you buy in the store it's all pretty much to a standard height uh just like I looked up
13:47
so if you can build the stuff in your van to that you're going to get a better uh experience it's going to feel more
13:53
like a normal seat that you would sit in which is kind of the whole point here
13:59
um yeah I think this is going to work now you will have to take this off because even if we hinge this up uh it
14:07
defeats the purpose of our storage box back here so this is more just to sit
14:13
and have on there um it's really like a placeholder just so I could kind of
14:19
visualize if they were going to get a seat pad how high is going to work for them um and so this is good because this
14:27
is very comfortable lot of padding so let's continue to build this
14:33
um actually just G to leave that on there and let's go and put the rest of this on
14:41
here so we need our so this piece is going to come right up there like
14:46
that we're just going to leave that there then we come to our back
14:54
piece and it just happened to be that
15:00
uh 3 and 1 12 in was the appropriate offset from the from your back sitting on the
15:06
wall so this is going to come just like that and again we have this Gap because
15:12
of the taper at the top and that's actually going to be laid
15:19
flat and then we're going to Pock a hole screw into
15:25
that so we can kind of take this out for now
15:30
we another piece on this back side and not only will this give us a a
15:36
a nail or to actually bolt into the floor of the
15:43
van and then here is our back
15:49
piece and so that all lines up flush
15:55
with what we're building
16:19
and then we just got two more pieces left this is for the backside actually three
16:27
pieces so we got we got our base back
16:34
here okay so we'll take this
16:40
off and so this uh this is the lid where the hinge will be right here and then
16:45
this will lift up and we want to make sure that the
16:52
distance for the hinge Mount we have is going to be enough for you know to to access some ruls of
17:00
toilet paper right
17:06
here and then on this back section we have our uh we've got our
17:13
supports that go in there just like that and then we'll have one final piece that may seem odd but it has to do
17:20
with uh making the opening and closing of the uh hinge possible so that piece
17:28
goes right like this and so we'll actually have a piece
17:34
uh copi to this which is going to be half inch so half inch piece of
17:40
uh sanded ply is going to go on top of here that's what the hinge is actually going to bite into and then what we'll
17:46
have for this extra section here you can see this will actually be the part that
17:53
has a lid that hinges so this will actually be the the opening and then this will come all the
17:59
way up and lay against the side of the van just like
18:06
that all right so that's what we're building today so we need to go ahead get
18:25
started now this is pretty much just like Legos we just need need to make sure that uh we keep everything nice and
18:32
square so we're using a CRA jig and we get this set to inch and a
18:37
half for our 2x4s we've got our 2 and 1/2 in Craig screws we got our drill we
18:44
got our drill bit now our drill bit we need to uh take this collar and we need to
18:49
resize the collar for inch and a
18:56
half and they've got some numbers down here so you can stop it at an inch and a
19:04
half and this gives you the safe depth so you don't blow through your material
19:10
and come out on the other side too deep and I did check the audio
19:18
so I'm not going to blow your guys' ears out
19:24
um yeah so this piece we are just going to lay down
19:30
here and then what I do is once I lay this
19:35
down I just take a pencil and I go through and I just put a
19:41
little tick on the piece of wood to to indicate that that's where I want my uh
19:47
pocket holes to go so this one we're going to do pocket holes here
19:59
and we're just going to start with that one
20:18
first now when you're doing pocket holes it is not critical that you Center this
20:23
piece of wood perfectly you just want it relative uh to whatever you're drilling
20:30
into this is uh this Craig Tool uh this clamp is okay for softwoods like 2x4s do
20:38
not use it for Birch um the drill will just walk all over the place and it's it's not good you also want to keep this
20:44
grip held down you shouldn't have to do that but just in my experience uh it's
20:50
not the best made tool
21:18
but it is pretty quick to use considering uh how it works
21:30
now this is going to be interesting I might have to catch what I said earlier because
21:36
uh actually haven't ever drilled pocket hole screws this close to
21:42
the uh The Edge before I may actually change that up
21:59
yeah I think I'm just going to bolt this screw this one in and then I'm going to go to the other one here think that's what I'll
22:15
do now this assembly looks awkward because I'm pretty much doing this for filming purposes so I usually wouldn't
22:23
be in this type of uh reaching over the table try to put this together
22:31
and let's grab another drill
23:06
now although it's tedious you're going to want to clamp This Together uh because it can move on you and it just
23:14
it's hard to fix it after it's moved on you
23:35
speaking of that I wanted to make sure I glue that
23:57
joint now I recommend that you glue all the joints so every joint in this van
24:02
has been glued but if you the pocket hole screws will hold
24:08
pretty
24:20
[Music] well and see this just helps you get a
24:27
nice clean
24:33
joint okay we're going to do this one a little bit different uh I haven't done this before so you
24:40
guys get to join me we're going to try and drill some pocket hole
24:49
screws in this thing sideways I think that's the only the
24:56
only amount of room that I have for this
25:14
so remember it's just wood so if we mess it up we'll just have to cut another piece
26:19
when you think your workbench is big enough it's still not big enough
27:14
[Applause]
28:15
[Music] so this a bolt shired off inside so it's
28:20
in there but the head broke off but that's okay we got one screw
28:26
we've got it glued all right so we're going to do the same thing here we're going to cut going to
28:33
drill this one just like the other
28:39
one see if we got anybody in the
28:53
chat ah I see good point good point Pat
29:01
yeah I can see how that is a is a better thing um for my
29:06
situation I think I'm G to have to do that just because I don't have enough room this is too
29:12
short [Music] so no but I think that's a good recommendation
29:38
you know we're just going to try we're just going to try to do double holes on this
29:44
one um all that's going to happen is that the entry Point's just going to overlap so
30:03
yeah so it can be
30:11
done no Pat thanks for that comment thanks for watching
30:40
now I will say if anybody is using 2x4s you got to be really diligent
30:48
on making sure that these things are
30:55
perfectly Square uh as far as when you take them to the table saw and you cut
31:14
them CU there I don't think any 2x4 I've ever
31:19
encountered has been perfect these are really good I I found some pieces these are
31:25
actually surprisingly true
32:01
[Music]
32:07
now I would also not recommend using an impact driver but I don't have two of these type of drills
32:14
so a regular drill is I would recommend
32:21
that because it's hard to get a feel when you've actually bottomed out with this type of
32:30
[Music]
32:36
drill all right this one was really flush over here so I didn't use clamps plus it was
32:43
pinching pretty well but this thing is really good we can do one final
32:51
check with a square just to see that's perfect
33:02
yeah excellent okay this is our front piece
33:07
so we're going to write front and have an arrow for
33:12
up so we we make sure that this is the one that we're going to use for the front of the
33:18
toilet um we're going to work on the back and then we'll work on the middle sections to tie everything
33:26
together this one we need to we need to do front on
33:35
here this is our top piece and this is the
33:44
back um while we're at it let's just go ahead and knock out these middle
33:51
supports again this is just for my sanity is just marking
33:58
so I don't have to think when I'm cutting these all these pieces out
34:52
if I had to do this over if I was if I knew I was going to do this much pocket hole drilling they make like a
34:58
contractor tabletop Craig tool and pretty much you just it's a tabletop
35:04
like a mini looks almost like a tabletop sole or router table it has a
35:10
uh a lever almost like a plunger and you just put the piece of wood in there pull it down flip it pull it
35:17
down it's a very fast but um yeah in
35:23
hindsight I probably will use that
36:07
also that tabletop version has a has a vacuum attachment so you don't
36:13
make a mess of your whole work area
37:00
[Applause]
37:15
okay so now work on
37:21
our back piece here
38:40
[Music]
39:35
that
40:11
and I've left myself about a qu inch of wiggle room on the back side of this toilet in the van not only does the wall
40:17
kind of curve in and there's this kind of dead space but um if you're watching
40:24
this and you're kind of worried that I'm kind of eyeballing this over
40:30
here it's because it's not really I have enough room to push this back this front
40:36
face that's the one that needs to be perfectly flush with the front face
41:08
we'll just Loosely clamp it up and we'll kind of tweak it
41:24
here okay you feel it's exactly the way you want
41:31
it and you can put some screws in
42:12
[Music]
42:53
there
43:00
okay so I want this one to be the top and I'm marking these like this
43:06
because I've already I've already laid this out in the van and it's uh for example I don't
43:12
want this not to show so it's on the backs side and the bottom little things like
43:20
that so here's the part where you can see if I lay this flush this is way out
43:26
of whack it's just 2x4s they're all cut to the perfect length that's all been
43:32
checked up um that's where we're going to be using the
43:38
clamp to bring it into
43:56
square for
44:29
so the flatness of this one is really important because this is
44:38
where that face frame is going to be that front panel is going to be
44:45
installed
44:56
[Music]
45:45
now when you drill these pocket holes there's actually this uh like/ inch portion that it's a pre- drills the hole
45:53
for the screw so when you're putting this screw in if if the angle's wrong you're going
46:00
to go into the side that is not designed for the screw to go in so you kind of want to go in there and fit it in first
46:06
and then find that little hole that's cut out get the screw in there and then start drilling
46:44
okay there's our top back
47:10
okay this is off just a hair but we already knew that so we'll be ready for it when we
47:17
put it together all right so this
47:24
part I'm G to start putting this piece
47:44
together so again this face right here that we're building right now this is the one that we need to make
47:50
sure it's nice and true for that panel to go on correctly
48:37
so this won't be on drawer slides so this will be a fixed good question this will be a
48:44
fixed uh
48:51
unit so the only thing that the only way this will operate is it will
49:02
uh the it'll open up you can use it flip up the toilet close it close it um but
49:08
it won't it won't actually pull out so it's actually it's meant to be used in place
49:28
[Music]
50:19
[Music]
50:46
this is like a this is like a 4X 8ft table it's still not big enough it's
50:51
funny it's the outfeed table to my cabinet so
50:59
I got three other tables in the shop but they're all taken up with part different parts of the van
51:05
that we're working on so one's one's the tracks saw table one's
51:10
the upholstery table this is the outfeed of the cabinet
51:24
saw oh come on
51:31
flip this
51:53
around okay we're off about a 16th on this joint right here so what we need to make sure that we
52:00
do uh our length is fine but we need to not we need to not drill into that
52:09
uh pocket screw yet until we get this other side
52:24
done okay moving on we got our top piece so this is front
52:51
[Music]
53:05
right we're going to get our kettle bell that we use to help us out in these situations keep this thing held
53:12
down get this joint
53:18
Square so now is this one you can see it's a little springy over here
53:36
see how was I going to do that other
53:52
side that's okay so this kind of goes to Pat's Point earlier if we did it over here this
54:00
wouldn't be interfering with uh what we're doing over here it's not
54:05
really interfering yet we will we will see if that's true or not here in just a
54:10
second
55:09
now they uh the Craig makes a shorter bit but I
55:16
found that if you use the shorter bit you have a tendency of going in at the wrong angle so you want to have the
55:22
lowest angle going in so if I can make it in here
55:30
I'll I'll continue to use this uh kind of low I mean longer bit
56:21
forgot to glue the joint back there
56:40
there we go if you give the glue just a minute it'll actually just drip right on
56:48
down the glue is just a b bonus in our case we're
56:54
not we're not relying on this that for this
57:09
structure but obviously we need this base to be flat because it's what's going on the floor of the van which is
57:16
very true and
57:25
flat for
57:36
[Music]
58:08
all right starting to look like a
58:16
box perfect that's awesome we are very good and square on
58:22
this so let's see we got other pieces
58:27
here so I laid it down to do that front face CU I just wanted to be square this
58:33
back one um I'll still do my best but I'm going to
58:38
be putting them in just like this because I know I have clearance back here
59:03
one thing I had I had considered putting this brace closer to keep this from
59:08
moving back and forth but it made it not possible to put the toilet paper in and
59:14
I think that's uh more important because this this will not be it won't be moving
59:20
around this box too much if you fill this area up here with toilet paper and cleaning supplies um it's it's not going to move
59:26
at all
1:01:31
and just again making a mental note you can see how we got a little bit of a teeter here so what we're going to do is
1:01:38
we'll secure this front face down first in the van um with our brackets and then we'll
1:01:45
tie in the back and it'll bring everything in through um for this one we
1:01:50
will flip it back and down
1:02:04
man tell you what I keep forgetting to glue this
1:03:31
[Music]
1:03:56
a little test for top
1:04:19
piece Okay so we've got our box
1:04:31
now for this back side this is going to be our support and it's pretty much
1:04:40
uh just a very fancy placeholder essentially because what we're going to do is we're going to put a piece
1:04:47
of half inch right on top of here and then we'll take our hinge
1:04:55
we got our stainless steel hinge and that's going to go right like
1:05:22
that all right
1:05:27
the fun thing about doing live streams is to get everything ready to prep for
1:05:32
the filming of the live stream but at the same time sometimes you
1:05:38
forget uh screws so I
1:05:47
need first I got to see if I have these screws that I want to use
1:06:04
h
1:06:28
let's see what we
1:06:41
got okay I might actually uh end the stream here let's uh let me show you
1:06:47
this toilet box going in here so essentially if you needed to take this out you would lift the lid up but now if
1:06:54
you see we can come in here and I did give uh an eighth of an inch
1:07:00
forward to back because I have some felt tape and
1:07:05
I'm going to put some felt tape here and that way this thing is not moving but it sits in here really nice and uh flush
1:07:13
also gives a nice tight fit um so this piece that's laying up
1:07:18
here again we get our piece of toilet paper toilet paper roll
1:07:27
standard size so this is perfectly
1:07:32
sized for that so I mean you can
1:07:38
stack see how many what do you got six you do six rolls in here that's pretty
1:07:44
awesome but yeah so this vect that worked out perfect this is the exact depth of our isotherm Cruise 130 we fit
1:07:52
we've got our trolino that's fit it fit in here perfect um you stack the toilet paper up here
1:07:58
it's going to be great your lid is going to be able to come up and so when you're done you
1:08:06
just truly know that's funny it's that it's soft close and then you'll do that and you'll
1:08:12
take your lid close it and this will hold be a unit
1:08:17
so um I'm going to go and get the hardware in the shop grab a
1:08:24
bite to eat and then I'm I'm going to come back here cut out my side two panels
1:08:30
um and then those will be taken off painted in the meantime this will be mounted into the van and then uh we'll
1:08:39
just do some touch-up paint install our hinge and then this will be checked off and next we'll move to the uh countertop
1:08:48
and the rear panel enclosure for the kitchen Galley so uh yeah I see uh wait wait we
1:08:56
got more some more questions here hold on a
1:09:05
second oh cool Pat yeah um I think this is a great toilet you know uh I've got
1:09:12
two customers um one uh that bought the uh first Adventure van that or the spec
1:09:20
Adventure van that we build built um that we took to shows uh they really like the trolino
1:09:27
um and the other customer like as well that's after giving them some options as
1:09:33
far as um like the uh see what's the cup on
1:09:38
there's like there's wrap on there is uh Lao or Lao dry
1:09:47
flush and then uh there's the composting toilets but to truly compost you need way much
1:09:55
more time so I I think if it was me in a van I'd use something like this where
1:10:01
you have a solids and liquid separator um because typically you're going number
1:10:08
one uh if you go number two then you know you're probably going to bag it up pretty quickly and get
1:10:15
disposed of it but having that separate is really nice um I think the composting
1:10:20
toilets is just a little too much work um
1:10:28
so screwing the piano hinges into the edge of the plywood uh I'm actually glad you mentioned
1:10:36
that um so yeah I'm glad you said something about
1:10:43
that so I've been using the Baltic Birch and that's been a really nice Hardy thing to drill
1:10:48
into um for the piano hinges I'm pre-drilling them so I'm pre-drilling
1:10:54
them with uh what size was a drill
1:10:59
bit it's really small I mean it might
1:11:05
be um maybe a it's not a it's probably a 32nd inch drill bit just something just
1:11:10
a very tiny something to get the just a little bit of the wood out so when it expands it doesn't uh fracture the wood
1:11:19
um but the ones that these these hes I've been using for the whole van I just like the way that they look they're stainless steel
1:11:25
they're inch and uh 1 and 116th inch by 12 in and they're actually meant to be
1:11:34
you can cut these to size so you can find out where you want to begin and end
1:11:39
and actually take a pair of 10 Snips and you can cut um then take a
1:11:46
hacksaw and cut the rod that goes in them U but they look really nice and so
1:11:51
this is what I've been using uh to do this so yeah I've had pretty good luck with
1:11:57
it um just pre- drwn the holes that's the best way to do it I would pre- drw
1:12:02
the holes that would be my recommendation um all right I got to
1:12:08
grab some food I'm going to come back we're GNA I'm going to put this piece on this will all be off camera you guys
1:12:14
will see the final result um if I can get the other things that I need to knocked out
1:12:19
today but yeah we're getting really close um kitchen Gall is in this drilling will be in today uh besides the
1:12:27
countertop and the back uh that's that's it for the structure of the middle of
1:12:32
the van um still need to do the three panel that's around the water tank
1:12:39
electrical box but uh yeah we are Trucking along um yeah stay tuned make
